Celebrity Tattoo of the Day: Brittany Snow

Brittany Snow is a bit of rare bird.  She is part of that unique group of actors who has been performing since childhood and has managed to remain normal and well-grounded.  Brittany had her first acting role in two separate cameo performances in the final season of the primetime, science fiction series “SeaQuest” (known as “SeaQuest 2032” that year).  She was just a wee lass of 8 years at that time.

Brittany had a few more small television roles before capping off her pre-teen years by landing her first major acting gig.  In 1998, she began a 3-year run as the second actress to portray Susan “Daisy” Lemay on the daytime soap opera “Guiding Light”.

She followed that up by spending her teen years in another star-making role:  as Meg Pryor in the primetime NBC hit “American Dreams”.  This series recalled that trying period when the U.S. had to endure the pains of growing from the innocence of the late 1950s and early 1960s to the more cynical and heartbreaking late 60s, which included political scandal, racial strife, and Vietnam.  Those topics were the backdrop against which the small town setting of “American Dreams” was established.  The character of Meg was a sheltered girl who just dreamed of dancing on “American Bandstand” while coming of age as the country did the same.  (One of the fun aspects of “American Dreams” was its guest appearances by current singers portraying musical stars of the 1960s, such as Usher as Marvin Gaye and Kelly Clarkson as Brenda Lee).

Once “American Dreams” went off the air in 2005, Brittany began to focus more on her film career.  She first starred in the unfortunate Vin Diesel film, “The Pacifier”, before taking a turn in the fun high school revenge comedy “John Tucker Must Die” (which starred “Dallas”‘ Jesse Metcalfe as the titular ‘John Tucker’).

She then did the obligatory young actress horror flick, “Prom Night”, before making another notable performance as the snooty Amber Von Tussle in the 2007 remake of the John Waters classic, “Hairspray”.  (Brittany is really talented at these throwback roles because, while she can easily embrace modern sexiness [as seen the photo above], she is equally capable of embodying the demure, reserved beauty of that earlier era).

More recently, Brittany hit it big in 2012’s musical comedy “Pitch Perfect”, a film about a college acapella singing group that surely pleased many ‘Gleeks’.  It starred many of the current up and coming crop of talented young actresses, such as Brittany, Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson.

Now, as much you have enjoyed reading about Brittany’s career, I know you’re really here to see the tattoos that this ‘good girl’ has ;-).

As of this posting, it appears that Brittany has two tattoos.  The first is this little lady bug design that appears on her right wrist.  There’s nothing complicated about it.  It’s just a sweet, cute image that she had fun with.

Brittany’s other tattoo is a Sanskrit inscription on the outside of her right ankle that, in Hindi, is pronounced “Abhay” and means ‘brave’

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day: Katie Cassidy

There are few family names that can be considered to be American celebrity ‘royalty’ quite like the name Cassidy.  To anyone who came of age in the 1970’s, that last name is legendary.  Not one, but two, teen idols shared that last name.  Brothers David and Shaun Cassidy (sons of prolific actor Jack Cassidy) were the true original teen idols.  They set the bar by which all future ‘Tiger Beat’ cover boys would be measured.

David Cassidy was the first, and probably best, known of the Cassidy boys with his star making role on “The Partridge Family” (with real-life stepmom, Shirley Jones) and his corresponding successful singing career.  Despite enjoying the trappings of teen fame in the 1970’s, David managed to settle down and become a family man.  One result of that transformation was the 1986 birth of the incredibly pretty Katie Cassidy.

Knowing the traps and pitfalls of childhood fame, Katie’s mother , Sheryl Williams (and David), kept her out of the professional acting arena until she completed high school.  Katie did get to develop her acting chops with numerous community theatre productions throughout her formative years.

After turning 18, Katie dabbled in modeling as part of an Abercrombie & Fitch campaign and then took a multiple episode role on the WB mainstay show “7th Heaven”.  Not long after, Katie scored her first major (non-horror) film role playing the role of the 27-year old version of Adam Sandler’s daughter in the 2006 film “Click” (which was one of Sandler’s rare, non-slapstick films).

Katie followed this by bolstering her television resume with extended stints on shows like “Supernatural” and “Harper’s Island”.  This all paved the way for her first shot at being a Hollywood ‘It Girl’ when the CW decided to relaunch the 1990’s guilty pleasure, “Melrose Place”, with a new generation.  The relaunch ended up not sticking around that long, but it did help Katie gain greater recognition.

She starred as the ill-fated best friend of Liam Neeson’s daughter in the surprise blockbuster “Taken”.  Then she did the obligatory “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake before she starred with ‘New 2 Tats’ sweethearts, Leighton Meester and Selena Gomez, in “Monte Carlo” (see the picture of all three of them below).  Katie is now starring in “Arrow”, a reimagining of DC Comics’ “Green Arrow”

KCassidy_Pic01     Katie is also quite the fan of body art.  My research has discovered that Katie currently has four tattoos.  The three that are regularly visible are very cute and very feminine.

The one that I have not been able to locate a photo of is one she has on her hip.  It is supposed to be the number ‘1923’ and it is a tribute to her grandmother, actress Evelyn Ward, who was born that year.

Katie is usually wearing sandals, or going barefoot, any chance she gets.  So, two of her other tattoos are frequently on display.  The one she got first was a set of three small stars on top of her right foot.  It represents her and her other two sisters.  It’s a bond she shares with the other two because they also got the same tattoos, but just placed it in different spots on their bodies.

You can tell Katie got that tattoo first because her left ankle tattoo does not appear in the above photo.  Her left ankle sports a gorgeous script design that reads “Love Thyself, Know Thyself, Be Thyself”.  Below are some photos that show this cute tattoo (and cute star tattoo) up close, as well as in regular view when she’s at an event.

Finally, Katie has a set of petite feminine wings on the upper, middle part of her back.  In the design, there is the Latin inscription “Alis volat Propiis”, which means ‘she flies with her own wings’.  Katie always proudly shows this one off in her numerous low-back dresses.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Scourge of all boyfriends edition): Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling is exactly that kind of guy that all guys hate.  He has that smug smirk, ripped abs, and smooth manner that make the ladies swoon.  Of course, many guys can pull that off.  There’s nothing unique about that.  What really makes him the scourge of every girl’s boyfriend is two words:  “The Notebook”.

The 2004 romantic weepy based on a Nicholas Sparks novel set the bar impossibly high for all boyfriends for years to come.  His portrayal of an incredibly attentive, thoughtful and romantic husband in “The Notebook” spawned millions of instances where an annoyed girlfriend would scream to her man, “Why can’t you be more like Ryan Gosling in ‘The Notebook’?!’.

Fortunately, Gosling has benefited from the passing of time.  It has dulled the impact of “The Notebook” while also giving him time to accept many films roles that show his range as an actor, as opposed to just his value as female eye candy.

Gosling got his start as a child actor in the Disney Channel’s 1993 reboot of “The Mickey Mouse Club”.  As this show was also responsible for giving us Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera (not to mention Jessica Simpson, Keri Russell, and JC Chasez), it’s not difficult to see how Gosling could end up being an afterthought, which he was for awhile.

However, in the early 2000’s he started to get on audiences’ radars with roles in “Remember the Titans” with Denzel Washington and “Murder by Numbers” with Sandra Bullock.  2004 brought “The Notebook”, which was responsible for him going supernova.  After the frenzy of “The Notebook” died down, Gosling followed the Leonardo DiCaprio (post-“Titanic”) path of transitioning from teen magazine pinup to legitimate actor.

Like DiCaprio, Gosling tackled weightier roles and darker themes in films like “Half Nelson” and “Lars and the Real Girl”, which earned him critical acclaim.  He also showed he was not afraid to go head-to-head with Hollywood heavyweights such as Anthony Hopkins in 2007’s underrated “Fracture”.  More recently, he more than held his own against Oscar winners George Clooney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in “The Ides of March” (which even included a third Oscar winner, but less acclaimed actress, Marisa Tomei).  With “Gangster Squad” about to be released, as well as two other films in the pipeline for 2013, Gosling will continue to be on the cinematic forefront with quality roles that help men forgive him for “The Notebook”

It should probably come as no surprise that Gosling is also a fan of tattoos.  Meaning seems to have little bearing on his decision to get them.  By his own admission, they are mostly homemade designs that he gets inked because they amuse him.  He has quite a few.  Here are some photos of his ink

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day: Colbie Caillat

In 2007, the radio airwaves were graced by the soft, breezy voice of Colbie Caillat when she released her first single, “Bubbly”, off her debut album “Coco”.  This earthy, hippy beauty struck gold (or, rather, platinum) with that first song, as it reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as #1 on the Adult Pop and Adult Comtemporary lists.

Colbie proved to be more than a one-hit wonder when she released her second single off “Coco”.  That song, “Realize”, managed to score her another Top 20 hit on the Hot 100.  Colbie’s musical appeal comes from the fact that, despite singing songs that about love and romance that cynical music fans may consider too soft, she managed to infuse them with a friendly and fun personality.  This has helped her sustain a fervent fan base (as has the numerous accounts of Colbie being very friendly and approachable to her fans at her concerts)

When you see Colbie, either in person or in pictures, you see that the physical beauty matches the light, fun personality of her songs.  She continued to promote this appealing musical identity with her second album, “Breakthrough”.  This album included another Top 20 song (#12), “Falling For You”, which included a humorous music video where she is on a goofy beach date with a guy who is clearly dating out of his league with her, but she ends up falling for him anyway.  Showing that music is a family business, “Falling For You” was produced by her father, Ken Caillat (as were her other albums).

“Breakthrough” made it all the way to #1 on the Billboard Album charts.  She followed that with a #6 charting album, “All of You”, in 2011 (her debut, “Coco”, reach #5).  “All of You” brought about the release of her next single, the bubbly love ballad “I Do”, and what might be her biggest hit so far, the Caribbean-inspired “Brighter Than the Sun”.

While “Brighter Than the Sun” only reached #47 on the Hot 100, its inclusion in the trailers for the Oscar-nominated film “The Help” shared it with a much wider audience and has led the song to become a mainstay on the ‘Mix’ radio station and Adult Contemporary stations for a few years now.  She also won two Grammy Awards in 2010:  one for Best Pop Collaboration with Jason Mraz for “Lucky” and another as a featured artist on Taylor Swift’s Album of the Year, “Fearless”. [I should note that her father also has one for producing Fleetwood Mac’s seminal album “Rumours”]

One thing you notice in photographs of Colbie is a flowery tattoo on her left forearm.  It started off as a small design (see below)

Colbie_Tat01    However, she has added to it over the years by having work done in three separate places:  Iowa, Paris, and Hawaii.  Now the design looks much bolder and completely adorable

She talks about this tattoo, and the one on her right foot (shown later) in this YouTube interview.  She admits to loving tattoos and wanting more.  Yet, she wants to make sure it is a good one for her because she doesn’t want to have her body cluttered with ink

Her foot tattoo is a blue jay standing upon a coconut.  The coconut represents her nickname, Coco (which clearly was the inspiration for her first album title).  The blue jay represents her producer, Michael Blue, and her best friend, and fellow songwriter, Jason Reeves.

Because Colbie loves to perform barefoot, or in very skimpy sandals, there are ample opportunities to see this wonderfully designed and incredibly cute tattoo.  Below are several photos that show off this fun piece of body art.

Hottie Ink Updates: Ashley Greene and Janel Parrish

One of the things I am trying to do more regularly here at “New 2 Tats” is provide updates of celebrities getting new tattoos, even if it does not call for a full blog entry of its own.  It’s important to stay up to date on new ink.  Otherwise, this blog runs the risk of becoming stale and forgettable, like those sites that throw together a gallery of celebrity tattoos and then never updates the gallery.

Today we are highlighting two celebrity hotties who have added more ink recently.  One is a self-confessed tattoo-addict and the other is only on her second tattoo, but will no doubt be adding more over time.

Janel Parrish

Back in July, the former “Bratz” actress and current “Pretty Little Liars” star made it on to this blog courtesy of a handful of noticeable tattoos and a memorable interview where she confessed to having 11 pieces of body art in total.  The original feature can be read here:

Since then, Janel has clearly added to her collection.  In an October update (which you can read here: https://new2tats.wordpress.com/2012/10/06/celebrity-tattoo-update-janel-parrish/), I highlighted her additional work alongside her left torso, a beautiful floral design.

She has added yet even more.  A new tattoo that regularly seen is the roman numeral ‘III’ on the inside of her left forearm, just below the elbow.  The pictures below show this new tattoo, along with some newer looks at her torso flower tattoo, which has garnered new attention following a recent sexy photo shoot

Ashley Greene

The “Twilight” movie series may have come to an end (not a moment too soon for some of us), but the glamorous and sexy Ashley Greene isn’t going anywhere.  Her elegant look and manner will continue to set the silver screen aflame for years to come.

In another bit of good fortune, she seems content to present more opportunities to feature her on “New 2 Tats”.  Previously, Ashley was recognized for an incredibly cute key and heart design behind her left ear (https://new2tats.wordpress.com/2012/07/14/celebrity-tattoo-of-the-day-ashley-greene/).  During a recent stay in New Orleans, she decided she wanted to bring some additional ink back home as a memento.  She visitied Downtown Tattoos in the Crescent City to get “Life’s a Dream” inscripted on her left foot.

Although she is missing some punctuation in the tattoo (something that is easily remedied), she seems to be quite fond of it.  She has featured an up close look at it on her Twitter page and she has shown it off during public appearances since she got it.  You can see this new tattoo below

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day: Oksana Akinshina

This Russian hottie continues to show the amazing beauties our Cold War enemy produces.  Oksana is not well-known to American audiences because she primarily stars in Russian cinema.  However, fans of the “Bourne” series will recognize her haunting expression from “The Bourne Supremacy”, where she played the orphaned daughter of a Russian couple that Jason Bourne quietly assassinated several years earlier.

American fans of foreign cinema will also recognize her standout performance in Lukas Moodysson’s “Lilya 4-Ever”.  Only 15 at the time the film was released, Oksana captivated audiences as a teenage prostitute in this cinematic condemnation of the human trafficking.

In her role in “Lilya 4-Ever”, you could see a very noticeable tattoo on her left upper arm.  I do not know if she had this before the movie was shot and she just incorporated it into the role, or if she had a fake one for the role and decided to make it permanent afterwards.  Either way, it is a fascinating tattoo that looks like it could be some kind of descending bird.

While I am not quite certain what it is, it is good looking body art and here are some other photos of Oksana proudly displaying it.

My 1-Year Anniversary of getting Inked!

One year ago today marked a dramatic change in my life.  After spending the first 35 years of my life being completely against tattoos, I finally overcame that mentality and went under the needle to get my first tattoo.  This image was inspiration for that tattoo:

After finally entertaining the idea of actually putting permanent ink on my body, I found this design on the web, as I was looking for something that would embrace my Irish-Scottish heritage.  What could be better than having those two flags crossed together?

The day I found this design, I knew there was no stopping me.  I was going to get that tattoo and get it that day, January 12th, 2012.  That evening, I went to Pop’s Tattoo at Wheaton Plaza and, under the skillful needle of “Danny Deathwish” (who has since moved on to RAW Ink in Gaithersburg, MD), I was inked:

It really didn’t hurt that much (though it was a fleshy part of the body), and the instant I saw the completed product, I knew I was hooked.  Everytime I look at this tattoo, I feel good about it.  I have enjoyed sharing it with other people (including those shocked by my change of heart)

You can read about how this ‘change of heart’ came about in my Manifesto: https://new2tats.wordpress.com/my-tattoo-manifesto/

It has just opened up a new way of thinking for me.  Since I joined the ‘club’, I have thoroughly enjoyed talking about tattoos and learning about the stories behind those belonging to other people (from the most deeply meaningful designs to the spur of the moment thoughts).

After enjoying many individual conversations with people, I decided I wanted to set up a forum to share thoughts, concepts, and ideas about tattoos.  After I wrote my Tattoo Manifesto, I conceived of the idea of a blog with which to share those thoughts.  Thus, on June 23rd, 2012, “New 2 Tats” was born.

The real fun with this blog was the Athlete and Celebrity Tattoo of the Day features I decided to run.  I wanted to make this about people who weren’t very well known, or who were, but people didn’t know they had body art.  So, celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Rihanna, and Megan Fox would not be featured here.  But, up and coming stars like Skylar Grey and Cassadee Pope would be, as well as more famous people like Selena Gomez and Charlize Theron.  Sometimes, the celebrities and athletes have replied and shared more details about their tattoos or just their appreciation of being featured.  It just helps make running this blog worthwhile.

Needless to say, there was very little doubt that I would be looking to get more body art.  Knowing that I was looking for more Celtic-themed tattoos, a good friend of mine suggested I check out Pinterest for tattoo ideas. Once there, I found a design I fell in love with:

Finally, on August 9th, 2012, I returned to the scene of Tattoo #1 and got this design applied to my leg:

As fond as I am of my first tattoo, I’m ecstatic about this one.  The color, lines, and overall design just make it stunning in my mind.  You can read about the experience of Tattoo #2 in this entry:  https://new2tats.wordpress.com/2012/08/11/tattoos-news-i-got-a-new-tattoo/

I am now, most definitely, a tattoo lover.  While I have no plans to go all ‘Travis Barker crazy’ with my personal ink, I do plan to keep an eye out for designs that I find striking that I think can find a good place on me.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the past year of a tattoo-ness and look forward to many more years of it 🙂
