Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Australian Idol Edition): Jessica Mauboy

JMauboy_Pic6    Australia has produced more than its fair share of talented individuals in athletics and in the arts (many of whom have a strong appreciation for body art).  One Australian who seems poised for a major mainstream breakthrough is Jessica Mauboy.

JMauboy_Pic1    Mauboy, who is an Indigenous Australian (her father is from Indonesia and mother is from the Kaku Yalanji tribe of Far North Queensland, Australia), made her first major breakthrough in 2012’s hit musical comedy/drama “The Sapphires”.  In that film, Jessica portrays Julie McCrae, a member of a 1960’s female singing group made up of Indigenous Australians (and bearing the name of the movie’s title), who gain fame from their touring performances, including for the troops in Vietnam.  “The Sapphires” won an AACTA Award (Australia’s version of the Oscars) for Best Picture, and Jessica won an individual AACTA for Supporting Actress.

JMauboy_Pic4     Jessica garnered her first attention, at age 14, during a local music festival.  This showcase of her impressive voice lead to her singing with Sony Music Australia.  While this initial effort at a singing career didn’t take off, it gave Mauboy a taste of what she wanted.  Her next step was to audition for the 2006 edition of the Australian version of “American Idol”, appropriately titled “Australian Idol”.

JMauboy_Pic2    Despite having to deal with an unfortunate, and tone deaf, comment from judge Kyle Sandilands about her weight, Jessica made “Idol” a largely positive experience for herself.  Routinely receiving rave reviews from judges and fans, Jessica made it all the way to the finale (at the world-famous Sydney Opera House) before finishing as the runner-up to Damien Leith.  This success led Mauboy to re-signing with Sony Music Australia.

JMauboy_Pic5     Jessica’s first post-“Idol” album was titled “The Journey”.  The name is representative of her “Australian Idol” experience and was a two-disc set that consisted of covers of some of her “Idol” songs and a DVD of her performances.  It reached #4 on the Australian Charts.  She followed that with her first album of original material, “Been Waiting”.  While it didn’t chart as well (only #11 on the Australian charts), it has been her best selling, earning a double platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).  In addition to her two other albums she has released, she has been very successful touring with two headlining tours, as well as supporting her style inspiration, Beyonce, on another tour.

JMauboy_Pic7    On the acting side, Jessica made her film debut, staying true to her Indigenous roots, in the Aboriginal musical, “Bran Nue Dae”.  Then, of course, there was her breakthrough success with “The Sapphires”.  When Jessica is not singing or acting, she is deeply engaged in philanthropic efforts.  These include her work with Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia, Woolworth’s Earn & Learn as well as numerous Aboriginal causes.  We should be hearing and seeing a lot more of this remarkable young star very soon.

JMauboy_Pic3    Jessica has a growing love of body art.  One of her most notable tattoos appears on the inside of her right ankle.  It is a butterfly surrounded by stars.  You get to see this pretty ink a lot because Jessica seems to prefer to pose for photos in a way that has this tattoo facing the camera.

JMauboy_Tat7JMauboy_Tat6JMauboy_Tat5JMauboy_Tat8Another one of Jessica’s tattoos appears on her upper back, just below the neck.  It reads, “J Mallie”.  According to Mauboy, it is represents her ‘fierce’ alter-ego, following the lead of her idol, Beyonce.

JMauboy_Tat4JMauboy_Tat1The only other tattoos I was able to find of her’s are a set of three tattoos that appear on her index, middle and ring fingers of her left hand.  The read “Love”, “Peace”, “Unity”.  These were inked on Jessica by Mahalo Design (an Australian tattoo studio specializing in cultural South Pacific style of Tatau).  They represent the key elements of Jessica’s life philosophy.  In keeping with a practice that I strongly encourage, Jessica was photographed while having the art applied.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (JoJo Edition): Joanna Levesque

Jojo_Pic01

Singer/Actress, Joanna Levesque, better known as JoJo, has been a performer nearly her entire life.  She has been a tattoo enthusiast almost her entire adult life.

Jojo_Pic05Born in 1990, JoJo was swept up in that wave of talent shows in the early 2000’s (beginning with “American Idol” before taking on numerous different forms).  She was a contestant on 2003’s “America’s Most Talented Kids”.  (This show was notable for introducing audiences to 2004 “Idol” runner-up, Diana DeGarmo, and 2007 “Idol” champion, Jordin Sparks).  JoJo made an impression and was quickly signed to the Blackground Records label.

Jojo_Pic02    The Vermont-born, Massachusetts native soon released a self-titled debut album.  While it was notable for drawing attention to Joanna’s soulful vocal range, this album was also controversial for songs that were a bit age-inappropriate for a 13-year old (most notably, the lead single, “Leave (Get Out)”).  The album was successful, reaching #4 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Jojo_Pic03     After her early musical success, JoJo (going by her actual name, Joanna Levesque) made her forays onto the big screen.  In the spring of 2006, she starred alongside fellow starlets, Emma Roberts and Sara Paxton in the tween comedy “Aquamarine”.  Later that year, Joanna starred in another family comedy, “RV”, as the daughter of Robin Williams and Cheryl Hines traveling on a disastrous family vacation.

Jojo_Pic04   2006 also saw the release of JoJo’s second album, “The High Road”.  With songs that were more age-relevant, “The High Road” also proved to be more successful.  It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, while the lead single “Too Little Too Late” also reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jojo_Pic06    As JoJo has become an adult, she has continued to focus on the next steps in her acting and singing careers.  On the acting front, she has had guest-starring roles on popular television series such as the “Hawaii Five-0”, and had a leading role in the recently released comedy film “G.B.F”.  On the singing side, JoJo recently resolved a dispute with Blackground Records and left them to join the Atlantic label.  She has released an EP and is working on her next full-length album, while also performing at this year’s SXSW festival.

When she’s not acting or singing, Joanna is active in numerous charities like Make-A-Wish, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and World Vision.

Jojo_Pic07    One thing that has become obvious as JoJo has grown up is how much she loves body art.  This recent article on Steal Her Style indicates that she has at least 13 tattoos (recent photos show a 14th), though her collection could very well include more as of this posting.  I have done my best to include all them here.

The tattoo that is probably the most significant for her is a treble clef on her left ring finger.  She says it represents that she’s ‘married to music’ and, until her future husband places a ring on that finger, the whole world will know this about her.

Jojo_Tat01Keeping with the musical theme, on in the inside of her right ear, JoJo has two music notes (as well as three red dots).  The meaning of the music notes is obvious, but the red dots are there just because she thinks they look cool.

Jojo_Tat07A wonderfully feminine style of tattoo that many women get is foot tattoos.  JoJo is no different.  She has several tattoos on her feet that are very cute.  One is a constellation of stars running down the top of her right foot.

Jojo_Tat12The other is on the inside of JoJo’s left ankle, she has a heart with a West African symbol that stands for “By God’s grace, all will be well”.

Jojo_Tat13    JoJo has other themes in her body art.  She is very proud of her New England roots and has two tattoos to symbolize it.  On the right side of her rib cage, she has a red outline of Massachusetts.  The other is on the back of her neck and has her last name followed by the state motto of New Hampshire, “Live Free or Die”.

Jojo_Tat09Jojo_Tat08

JoJo definitely seems to be a fan of the red ink tattoos (not unlike Ellie Goulding or Amber Heard).  She has the phrase ‘ever to excel’ running down the right side of her torso, just above the hip, in red ink.

Jojo_Tat11Continuing to show her passion for music, JoJo shows an exquisite design on her back that has the phrase ‘love & music’ set against a sheet of musical notes (This is my favorite of all of her tattoos).

Jojo_Tat10JoJo has many tattoos on her hand.  Among them are a 4-leaf clover below the knuckle on her right ring finger and a red star, on the same hand, in the webbing between her ring and middle finger.

Jojo_Tat02Jojo_Tat03On the outer part of her right hand, she had the word “Truth” inscribed.

Jojo_Tat04In a bit of a playful mood, JoJo got the design on a T-Rex skeleton on her left forearm.

Jojo_Tat06Finally, wrapped around her right wrist, JoJo has Serenity Prayer etched in black ink with a few words inked in green.

Jojo_Tat05(Editor’s Note:  After the Steal Her Style article came out, JoJo added a 14th tattoo to her collection, a map of the world on her right wrist):

It’s nearly impossible to not fall in love with Ellie Goulding.  In addition to be being both sexy and cute, she has such a wonderful, angelic voice.  She also continues to display a growing love of body art.  The “Burn” singer had already shown off two cute ink pieces.  The first was a little red triangle on her right wrist (which just represents her love of triangles…. so, the Illuminati conspiracy theorists can chill out).  The second was a white ink arrow on her right index finger (which she got while filming the music video for “I Need Your Love” and included it in the video.)

Since the last “New 2 Tats” feature on Ellie, the British songstress has continued her high-energy music career, with numerous tour stops while staying committed to her running and recording.  She has also scored the featured track on the soundtrack for the movie “Divergent”.  The song is called “Beating Heart”.

Now, on to Ellie’s new tattoos.  The first new one (her third) is another red ink tattoo.  This time it is on her left wrist.  It is a Tibetan mantra that reads “Om mani padme hum”, which means “jewel of the lotus”.

EllieG_Update3_Tat05EllieG_Update3_Tat01Tattoo #4 stayed with the lotus theme, and showed Ellie getting much bolder with her body art.  This time, she got a black ink lotus flower on her right rib cage.  This is an extraordinarily well designed tattoo and it fits Ellie beautifully.

EllieG_Update3_Tat03EllieG_Update3_Tat04EllieG_Update3_Tat02Ellie’s most recent work was done by Dr. Woo from the Shamrock Social Club.  Dr. Woo’s stellar work is gaining such notoriety that he recently got his own feature in Buzzfeed.

We certainly haven’t heard the last of Ellie’s incredible voice.  I suspect we also have not witnessed the last of her body art.  As she continues to get inked, “New 2 Tats” will continue to feature it.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Waverly Wizard Edition): Jennifer Stone

JenStone_Pic07The “Wizards of Waverly Place” is already known as the Disney show that helped launch the career of Selena Gomez (the “New 2 Tats” personal favorite) as Alex Russo.  However, it also was the first major television role for actress Jennifer Stone, who portrayed Harper Finkle, the best friend of Selena’s Alex.

Wizardly BFFs

At a mere 10 years old, Jennifer kicked off her acting career in 2003, in the film “Secondhand Lions”.  There are few better actors to learn from than her co-stars, Robert Duvall and Michael Caine.  Her performance got good notices, and she received a Young Artist Award Nomination’

JenStone_Pic03After making her major film debut, Jennifer began developing her resume on the small screen.  In 2005, she had a guest role in an episode of “House”, where she played an obese young girl whose cardiac arrest and chronic weight issues challenge Dr. House and his team to determine the real cause of her suffering.  This dramatic performance earned Jennifer another Young Artist Award nomination.

jenstone_pic06Other guest roles Jennifer’s included spots on the shows “Without a Trace” and “Phineas and Ferb”.  2007 saw her first lead television role on “Wizards of Waverly Place”.  “Wizards….” earned Jennifer yet another Young Artist Award nomination, as well as one for the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards.

jenstone_pic02While Jennifer worked on “Wizards…” for five seasons, she also continued to dabble in film projects.  She was one of the voices in the Disney Chanel Original Movie “Dadnapped”.  She also was the main character in “Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars”.  She also starred in the ABC Family film, “Mean Girls 2”, as Abby Hanover (in a role similar to Lizzy Caplan’s Janis Ian, in the original theatrical release).

jenstone_pic04More recently, Jennifer has been in the Disney Chanel Original Film “The Wizards Return:  Alex vs. Alex” a movie that followed the events of the television show.  She is also starring in shows like “Deadtime Stories” and “Body of Proof”.  She also has a film titled “High School Exorcism” (alongside Janel Parrish) coming down the pipeline.

JenStone_Pic01At a recent red carpet even, Jennifer showed off her first tattoo.  It is a quote on her upper back of the bible verse Ecclesiastes 3:1, which reads “For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven”.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Bachelorette Edition): Ali Fedotowsky

AliFed_Pic02Reality TV has certainly become a staple of the of the network and cable programming cycles.  For better or for worse, the low production costs make these types of shows very cost effective to produce.  The audience appeal of tabloid-style entertainment also makes these shows very profitable.  One of the more popular varieties of reality television are the ‘find true love’ shows, embodied in the “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” series.

AliFed_Pic06One of the more common practices from the “Bachelor/Bachelorette” series is to take one of the more popular contestants who did not ‘win’ one of the shows and make them the main person on the other show.  In 2010, that person was Ali Fedotowsky.

AliFed_Pic01Ali, a New England girl who was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts and attended college at Clark University in Worcester, began 2010 on “The Bachelor:  On the Wings of Love” as one of the contestants vying for the affections of pilot, Jake Pavelka.  Ali made the top 4 out of the original 25 ladies.  However, she ended up choosing to leave when faced with an ultimatum from her job to quit the show or be fired.

AliFed_Pic04Whatever obstacles from her job that caused her to leave “The Bachelor” were apparently resolved several months later (her company either retracted their ultimatum or she left them).  She returned to be lead in the sixth season of “The Bachelorette”.  At the end of the show, she chose suitor Robert Martinez and became engaged.  Of course, as with that usually happens with these shows, Ali and Robert ended their relationship a little while later.

AliFed_Pic05Since the conclusion of her reality tv run, Ali has remained in the public eye.  She has since become a host on the NBC lifestyle show “1st Look” and became an entertainment correspondent for “E! News”.  Ali also was a judge for the 2012 “Miss USA” pageantalifed_pic03Ali decided to finish 2011 by getting her first tattoo.  On her right wrist, she go the word ‘endure’ inscribed in her grandmother’s handwriting.  The inspiration is from a sage piece of advice her grandmother gave her:  “As through life we experience sunshine and rain… the secret it to endure”.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Country Starlet Edition): Kacey Musgraves

KaceyMus_Pic05    Texas girl, Kacey Musgraves, has certainly been living a charmed life in recent years.  The young country singer has made a big splash on the music charts and looks to be a force for years to come.

KaceyMus_Pic03Saying that music has been Musgraves’ life is not an exaggeration.  She has been writing songs since she was just 8 years old.  Her beginning on string instruments was with the mandolin.  At age 12, she began taking guitar lessons.

kaceymus_pic02As Kacey got older, she paid her dues the way many aspiring musicians do, by building a reputation and following by performing at a variety of music festivals.  When she turned 18, she officially started in the country music industry by recording demos to make money.  She appeared in country music talent show “Nashville Star” in 2007, but only finished 7th (an significant oversight on their part).

KaceyMus_Pic01Doing the grunt work began showing results for Kacey in 2008.  She signed with the independent label, Triple Pop, and recorded a few songs that are available in digital EP format.  Eventually, Kacey got her first big break in when she joined Lady Antebellum (and “New 2 Tats” cutie, Hillary Scott, on tour in the United Kingdom.

KaceyMus_Pic04After touring the UK, Kacey signed with a major label, Mercury Records, and began working on her first big album.  That debut, “Same Trailer Different Park” set the country music charts on fire.  It reached #1 on the Billboard Country Music Chart, and reached #2 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart (all genres are covered here).  Singles from that album, such as “Follow Your Arrow” and “Merry Go ‘Round” got into the top 20 of the Billboard Country Music singles charts.

KaceyMus_Pic06In addition to her popular success, the awards shows confirmed her critical success.  In 2013, she was nominated for 6 CMA (Country Music Association) awards, winning for ‘New Artist of the Year’.  She followed that with a stunning collection in 2014.  She won two Grammy Awards (one for ‘Best Country Song’ and one for ‘Best Country Album’).  She then scored with ‘Album of the Year’ (in both the artist and producer categories) at the prestigious Academy of Country Music Awards show.  Kacey is going to be a major player for quite some time.

KaceyMus_Pic07

In addition to scoring big in the trophy category at the 2014 Grammy Awards, Kacey also used that forum to announce her love of body art.  Wearing a gorgeous dress that had sheer sides and back, she revealed a very pretty tattoo of an anchor surrounded by yellow roses on her right torso.
