Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Bad ‘Habits’ Edition): Tove Lo

While 2014 in the music industry has been dominated by some less than inspiring acts (I’m specifically referring to Iggy Azalea), it has introduced several new performers who show considerable potential because of intriguing lyrics and appealing styles.  One of those new names to make waves this year is Swedish pop star Tove Lo.

ToveLo_Pic02    Born Tove Nilsson, in Stockholm, Sweden, Tove Lo always felt the juices of artistic creativity flowing through her veins.  She grew up writing poetry and short stories, a talent that would serve her well when she turned to music.  For a little while, Tove was a member of a band called Tremblebee.  She eventually went solo to focus on her own singing and song-writing endeavors.

ToveLo_Pic05    Tove’s career took a big step forward when she started working with song-writing kingmaker, Max Martin.  Tove’s narrative talents allowed her to write good songs for many acts.  Among the performers who have benefited from Tove’s storytelling are Icona Pop, Girls Aloud and Lea Michele.

ToveLo_Pic04    Efforts in song-writing notwithstanding, Tove also had desires to get in front of the microphone.  Her debut album, “Truth Serum”, was released in 2012.  It included tracks like “Love Ballad” and “Out of Mind”.

“Truth Serum” also contained another song that is destined to put Tove on the map.  “Habits (Stay High)” is a catchy, yet painfully emotional, song about the self-destructive behaviors one woman is putting herself through to forget a bad breakup.  The accompanying music video gives a powerful perspective on Tove playing the role of the distraught ex-girlfriend.  Taking part in that video was a draining experience for her.  “Habits” had been simmering in the lower-levels of the Billboard Hot 100 until it started getting heavier airplay.  It now sits at #23 and is rising quickly.

ToveLo_Pic01    Later this fall, “Habits” will be repackaged as a track on Tove’s first major album release, “Queen of the Clouds”.  With her strong song-writing skills and emotional vocals, Tove should be around for awhile.

ToveLo_Pic03    It is not difficult to see how much Tove loves tattoos.  Elaborate illustrations are visible on her left upper arm and right forearm (both are by painter Mark Ryden).  The design on her right forearm is a flaming heart with an eye in the center.

ToveLo_Tat05ToveLo_Tat04   On her left upper arm, she has an intriguing female caricature.  It is her most noticeable tattoo and her favorite.

ToveLo_Tat02ToveLo_Tat01ToveLo_Tat0ToveLo_Tat06ToveLo_Tat07    On the front her right collarbone, Tove has a design of a scorpion.  No doubt, it is inspired by her sign, which is Scorpio (She was born on October 29th).  Interestingly enough, she professes to seriously disliking it (I think it’s well done and fits her public persona).

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Band Camp Edition): Alyson Hannigan

AlysonH_Pic01Courtesy of 1999’s sleeper comedy hit, “American Pie”, audiences were introduced to how naughty ‘band geeks’ can be (I had band friends later confirm that this portrayal was accurate).  The poster child for this newly discovered freaky reputation was actress Alyson Hannigan, who portrayed the deceptively nerdy Michelle.  Because of Alyson, you will probably never look at a flute the same way again.

AlysonH_Pic02    Before Alyson showed off the raunchy side of ‘nerd chic’, she had been a fixture in front of the camera for nearly two decades.  Born in Washington, D.C. in 1974, Alyson began appearing in commercials when she was just 4 years old.  Recognizing that she had a lot of potential, her parents moved to Hollywood when she was 11 in order to be closer to the showbiz industry.  Her first major role occurred in 1988 when she starred in “My Stepmother Is an Alien”, where she performed alongside Dan Aykroyd, Kim Basinger and eventual on-screen boyfriend, Seth Green.

AlysonH_Pic07    Following that initial success, Alyson had guest spots on several popular television shows, such as “Picket Fences” and “Roseanne”, while also being the lead in the short-lived series “Free Spirit”.  It was in 1997 that all of Alyson’s fortunes changed.  That year, the WB Network launched the supernatural series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (and very loosely based on forgettable 1992 film of the same name).

AlysonH_Pic03    Alyson portrayed Willow Rosenberg, a devoted friend and ally of Gellar’s Buffy Summers.  She was initially the girlfriend of Oz (Seth Green) before embarking on one of the pioneering relationships in television.  After Green left the show to focus on his movie career, Willow ended up falling in love with Tara Maclay (Amber Benson), in one of the first regular on-screen lesbian couples in television.  It may not seem like much of a big deal today for TV.  However, when you remember that this was not long after Ellen publicly came out, it was a risky move.  It was also very important because it showed an open, positive LGBT relationship that many could connect with.

AlysonH_Pic06    In the middle of her run on “Buffy”, Alyson scored her signature role as Michelle Flaherty in the “American Pie” series.  While I’m sure the initial film was just viewed as a throwaway summer laugh-fest, with Alyson’s character as one of many interchangeable parts, the film’s surprising success (and Alyson’s endearing performance of Michelle) led to two immediate sequels (and another one about a decade later) and Michelle becoming one of the central characters.

Lest you think Alyson’s brand of humor had a limited shelf-life, 2005 saw her next major move.  She took the role of Lily on the wildly popular ensemble comedy “How I Met Your Mother”.  This ratings darling scored Alyson two People’s Choice Awards and moved her Q-rating into a status that can only be described as legen-wait for it-dary.  Despite all of this on-screen success, Alyson still found time to get married (to “Buffy” co-star, Alexis Denisof) and have two daughters.

AlysonH_Pic05    One thing Alyson has never been particularly shy about is her affinity for body art.  On her lower back, she has a Kanji symbol for luck & happiness.

AlysonH_Tat03On the inside of her right ankle, Alyson has two dolphins inscribed.  On her left foot, she has a turtle.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day: Vanessa Ferlito

VFerlito_Pic02    My first introduction to actress Vanessa Ferlito occurred during the third season of Keifer Sutherland’s magnum opus, “24”.  Vanessa portrayed Claudia Hernandez, the reluctant girlfriend of Hector Salazar (Vincent Laresca), a Mexican drug lord with access to deadly virus that Jack Bauer (Sutherland) has gone undercover to stop.  She was very good in this role and she displayed her real life love of body art.

VFerlito_Pic01   Vanessa (who is of Italian descent, but known mostly for playing Latina roles) had a difficult early childhood.  Born in Brooklyn, New York, she suffered the loss of her father to a heroin overdose when she was just two years old.  Fortunately, she had a strong support system with her mother and, when her mother remarried, her stepfather, who raised her while also running a Brooklyn hair salon.

VFerlito_Pic06    Vanessa made her acting debut in 2002, staring in the sexual comedy “On_Line”, where she portrayed one of the stars of an adult webcam site.  It received viewings at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals.  Vanessa soon got other small roles in shows like “Third Watch”, “Law & Order” and the Edward Norton film “25th Hour”.

VFerlito_Pic03    2003-2004 was Vanessa’s breakthrough period.  She had her major role in “24”.  She also had a cameo on the “Sopranos” and “CSI: Miami”, while also being in the summer blockbuster “Spiderman 2”.

VFerlito_Pic07    The next years saw her as one of the stars in the murder-comedy (yes, you read that right), “Man of the House” (starring Tommy Lee Jones).  She also parlayed her guest spot on “CSI: Miami” into a regular role on its spinoff “CSI: NY”.  Most notable during this time was her performance as Arlene in Quentin Tarantino’s ode to 70’s pulp films, “Grindhouse” (She was in the segment “Death Proof”).

VFerlito_Pic05   She scored roles in some more major theatrical releases, such as “Julie and Julia” and “Wall Street:  Money Never Sleeps” before making a move back to the small screen for a significant lead role.  She stars in the USA drama “Graceland”.  In it, she portrays FBI agent ‘Charlie’ DeMarco, one of several undercover law enforcement officers lodging together while they work major cases.  Already in its second season, we should be seeing more of Vanessa for the foreseeable future.

VFerlito_Pic04    Vanessa’s role in “24” showed she has an appreciation of body art.  A dream catcher could be seen on her left shoulder.  This was not for the role.  It was her real life tattoo.

On her left wrist, she has a tribute to her late father with ‘Dad’ and a star inscribed.

Vanessa also appears to have a design of a spade or an apple on her right wrist.

On the back of her left bicep, she has an unknown design.

VFerlito_Tat05    Finally, on her right bicep, she has the date ‘9-21-07’ inscribed, for the birth date of her son, Vince.

I could not locate any official, or fan, websites for Vanessa.  I was not able to find a verified Twitter account for her either.

However, Vanessa seems to have a presence on Instagram:  http://instagram.com/vanessaferlito
