Athlete Tattoo of the Day (Surfer Girl Edition): Kelia Moniz

KMoniz_Pic03   Oh, how I wish I could live the life of a surfer in Hawaii (and they all seem to live in Hawaii).  It seems so calm and peaceful.  To be able to spend your days with the sand between your toes and taking on some righteous waves seems positively zen.  However, unless you are independently wealthy from an inheritance or Powerball win, living that life does require quite a bit of effort.

KMoniz_Pic02    Kelia Moniz is the another in a long line of female surfers (I have already featured Coco Ho) who go after that dream life with a commitment and devotion that people usually don’t put forth in other walks of life.  Sure, surfing carries the appeal of sun, sand and waves.  But, dedication and professionalism is what makes that life succeed.  Kelia lives that life because she puts that effort forth all the time.

Kelia has grown up in the tropical paradise of the Hawaii.  The Asian-Irish beauty found her first waves at the age of 5.  She grew up in a household of brothers who also love to surf.  Oh, and just as a side note, her father was a former professional surfer.  So, it can easily be said that sun and saltwater are in Kelia’s blood.

Kelia’s commitment to her craft has already yielded quite a bit of success.  At just 21 years of age, Kelia just recently captured her second straight world title in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP).

KMoniz_Pic05KMoniz_Pic04     In addition to being an incredibly accomplished surfer, Kelia is a highly sought after model.  Her stunning beauty, with her healthy body image athletic physique, make her a natural in front of the camera.  (That wondrous smile doesn’t hurt, either 😉  ).

KMoniz_Pic07

Chilling with Selena Gomez.

Kelia is right at home on the surfboard, as well as in full makeup on camera.  Her appeal has the potential to make her an athletic, and pop culture, superstar in the coming years.  It’s a sure bet that her surfing titles with grow well beyond the two she has so far.

It goes without saying that, even with her athletic accomplishments and natural beauty, Kelia would not be featured here if it wasn’t for her appreciation of body art.  At the current time, she has been spotted with two small tattoos.

Kelia’s first tattoo in a small heart on the outside of her right wrist (not unlike the one British singer Foxes has)

KMoniz_Tat03

KMoniz_Tat01Her other tattoo is the Roman numeral VII (7) on her left forearm.  I don’t know its significance, but it is definitely cute.

KMoniz_Tat02    I suspect we will see more ink from Kelia over time.  She seems to like tattoos; they are popular in the surfing community; and Kelia’s Irish heritage gives her a wealth of wonderful designs to choose from.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day: Jennifer Finnigan

JFinnigan_Pic01    My first introduction to strawberry-blonde beauty, Jennifer Finnigan, occurred during a period in my life when I still regularly watched soap operas (yes, I’m not ashamed to admit this, though I do blame my mom for the influence).  In what was Jennifer’s first major acting role, in 2000 she joined the cast of “The Bold and the Beautiful” (one of the most popular soaps out there, despite only running 30 minutes per episode), as the second actress to portray Bridget Forrester.  Agnes Bruckner (who may, one day, be featured on this blog) was the first.

JFinnigan_Pic05

Jennifer with brief on-screen husband, Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan)

In a common practice for soap operas, Jennifer’s portrayal of Bridget was part of ‘rapid aging syndrome’ where the character was advanced in age to her early 20’s from the pre-teen version portrayed by Bruckner.  And, in another common practice for soap operas, her familial relationships kept changing.  First, she was Ridge Forrester’s daughter.  Then, it was found out that she and Ridge were siblings because Eric Forrester (Ridge’s father) was actually Bridget’s father.  Then, it was discovered that Ridge and Bridget weren’t related at all because Ridge’s real father was Massimo Marone.  Keep track of all this; there will be a quiz at the end of the post (no, not really).

JFinnigan_Pic02    While “The Bold and the Beautiful” was the show that brought Jennifer to a wider audience, it was by no means her first exposure to acting.  The Montreal-born Finnigan actually had one of her earliest roles in three episodes of the Nickelodeon kids series, “The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo”.  Around the same time, she exercised her humor muscles in the Canadian comedy “Student Bodies”.

JFinnigan_Pic04    In 2004, she left her role as Bridget Forrester in search of bigger acting opportunities.  That same year, she landed a 10-episode guest role on the crime drama “Crossing Jordan”.  She portrayed Dr. Devan Maguire, a young pathologist who frequently butted heads with (but always looked up to) lead pathologist, Jordan Cavanaugh (Jill Hennessey).  The tragic death of her character in a plane crash brought that role to a close.

JFinnigan_Pic03    Despite her frequent dramatic roles, comedy seems to be in Jennifer’s blood, both professionally and romantically.  After years of dating, Finnigan wed comedic actor, Jonathan Silverman in 2007 on the island of Mykonos in Greece.  Silverman is known for his roles in films like “Weekend at Bernie’s”, “Brighton Beach Memoirs” as well as a being on the NBC comedy “The Single Guy”.

JFinnigan_Pic07   After “Crossing Jordan”, Jennifer spent two seasons as the lead character in the Jerry Bruckheimer crime drama “Close to Home” (notice a pattern here?) before doing a series of TV movies and guest roles (including an episode of “Psych”).  This fall, she returned to the starring ranks in the FX series “Tyrant” where she portrays the American wife of a pediatrician who also happens to be the estranged son of the brutal dictator of a fictional Middle Eastern country.  The early reviews have been uneven, but the show has potential and will be interesting to watch it, and Jennifer’s character, develop.

JFinnigan_Pic06    Jennifer is not one the avoid the beauty of body art, either.  While she is seldom photographed displaying it, she does have a little heart tattoo in a ribbon along her right hip.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Bad ‘Habits’ Edition): Tove Lo

ToveLo_Pic06

While 2014 in the music industry has been dominated by some less than inspiring acts (I’m specifically referring to Iggy Azalea), it has introduced several new performers who show considerable potential because of intriguing lyrics and appealing styles.  One of those new names to make waves this year is Swedish pop star Tove Lo.

ToveLo_Pic02    Born Tove Nilsson, in Stockholm, Sweden, Tove Lo always felt the juices of artistic creativity flowing through her veins.  She grew up writing poetry and short stories, a talent that would serve her well when she turned to music.  For a little while, Tove was a member of a band called Tremblebee.  She eventually went solo to focus on her own singing and song-writing endeavors.

ToveLo_Pic05    Tove’s career took a big step forward when she started working with song-writing kingmaker, Max Martin.  Tove’s narrative talents allowed her to write good songs for many acts.  Among the performers who have benefited from Tove’s storytelling are Icona Pop, Girls Aloud and Lea Michele.

ToveLo_Pic04    Efforts in song-writing notwithstanding, Tove also had desires to get in front of the microphone.  Her debut album, “Truth Serum”, was released in 2012.  It included tracks like “Love Ballad” and “Out of Mind”.

ToveLo_Pic07

Tove getting the ‘Royal’ treatment

“Truth Serum” also contained another song that is destined to put Tove on the map.  “Habits (Stay High)” is a catchy, yet painfully emotional, song about the self-destructive behaviors one woman is putting herself through to forget a bad breakup.  The accompanying music video gives a powerful perspective on Tove playing the role of the distraught ex-girlfriend.  Taking part in that video was a draining experience for her.  “Habits” had been simmering in the lower-levels of the Billboard Hot 100 until it started getting heavier airplay.  It now sits at #23 and is rising quickly.

ToveLo_Pic01    Later this fall, “Habits” will be repackaged as a track on Tove’s first major album release, “Queen of the Clouds”.  With her strong song-writing skills and emotional vocals, Tove should be around for awhile.

ToveLo_Pic03    It is not difficult to see how much Tove loves tattoos.  Elaborate illustrations are visible on her left upper arm and right forearm (both are by painter Mark Ryden).  The design on her right forearm is a flaming heart with an eye in the center.

ToveLo_Tat05ToveLo_Tat04   On her left upper arm, she has an intriguing female caricature.  It is her most noticeable tattoo and her favorite.

ToveLo_Tat02ToveLo_Tat01ToveLo_Tat0ToveLo_Tat06ToveLo_Tat07    On the front her right collarbone, Tove has a design of a scorpion.  No doubt, it is inspired by her sign, which is Scorpio (She was born on October 29th).  Interestingly enough, she professes to seriously disliking it (I think it’s well done and fits her public persona).

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (JoJo Edition): Joanna Levesque

Jojo_Pic01

Singer/Actress, Joanna Levesque, better known as JoJo, has been a performer nearly her entire life.  She has been a tattoo enthusiast almost her entire adult life.

Jojo_Pic05Born in 1990, JoJo was swept up in that wave of talent shows in the early 2000’s (beginning with “American Idol” before taking on numerous different forms).  She was a contestant on 2003’s “America’s Most Talented Kids”.  (This show was notable for introducing audiences to 2004 “Idol” runner-up, Diana DeGarmo, and 2007 “Idol” champion, Jordin Sparks).  JoJo made an impression and was quickly signed to the Blackground Records label.

Jojo_Pic02    The Vermont-born, Massachusetts native soon released a self-titled debut album.  While it was notable for drawing attention to Joanna’s soulful vocal range, this album was also controversial for songs that were a bit age-inappropriate for a 13-year old (most notably, the lead single, “Leave (Get Out)”).  The album was successful, reaching #4 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Jojo_Pic03     After her early musical success, JoJo (going by her actual name, Joanna Levesque) made her forays onto the big screen.  In the spring of 2006, she starred alongside fellow starlets, Emma Roberts and Sara Paxton in the tween comedy “Aquamarine”.  Later that year, Joanna starred in another family comedy, “RV”, as the daughter of Robin Williams and Cheryl Hines traveling on a disastrous family vacation.

Jojo_Pic04   2006 also saw the release of JoJo’s second album, “The High Road”.  With songs that were more age-relevant, “The High Road” also proved to be more successful.  It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, while the lead single “Too Little Too Late” also reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jojo_Pic06    As JoJo has become an adult, she has continued to focus on the next steps in her acting and singing careers.  On the acting front, she has had guest-starring roles on popular television series such as the “Hawaii Five-0”, and had a leading role in the recently released comedy film “G.B.F”.  On the singing side, JoJo recently resolved a dispute with Blackground Records and left them to join the Atlantic label.  She has released an EP and is working on her next full-length album, while also performing at this year’s SXSW festival.

When she’s not acting or singing, Joanna is active in numerous charities like Make-A-Wish, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and World Vision.

Jojo_Pic07    One thing that has become obvious as JoJo has grown up is how much she loves body art.  This recent article on Steal Her Style indicates that she has at least 13 tattoos (recent photos show a 14th), though her collection could very well include more as of this posting.  I have done my best to include all them here.

The tattoo that is probably the most significant for her is a treble clef on her left ring finger.  She says it represents that she’s ‘married to music’ and, until her future husband places a ring on that finger, the whole world will know this about her.

Jojo_Tat01Keeping with the musical theme, on in the inside of her right ear, JoJo has two music notes (as well as three red dots).  The meaning of the music notes is obvious, but the red dots are there just because she thinks they look cool.

Jojo_Tat07A wonderfully feminine style of tattoo that many women get is foot tattoos.  JoJo is no different.  She has several tattoos on her feet that are very cute.  One is a constellation of stars running down the top of her right foot.

Jojo_Tat12The other is on the inside of JoJo’s left ankle, she has a heart with a West African symbol that stands for “By God’s grace, all will be well”.

Jojo_Tat13    JoJo has other themes in her body art.  She is very proud of her New England roots and has two tattoos to symbolize it.  On the right side of her rib cage, she has a red outline of Massachusetts.  The other is on the back of her neck and has her last name followed by the state motto of New Hampshire, “Live Free or Die”.

Jojo_Tat09Jojo_Tat08

JoJo definitely seems to be a fan of the red ink tattoos (not unlike Ellie Goulding or Amber Heard).  She has the phrase ‘ever to excel’ running down the right side of her torso, just above the hip, in red ink.

Jojo_Tat11Continuing to show her passion for music, JoJo shows an exquisite design on her back that has the phrase ‘love & music’ set against a sheet of musical notes (This is my favorite of all of her tattoos).

Jojo_Tat10JoJo has many tattoos on her hand.  Among them are a 4-leaf clover below the knuckle on her right ring finger and a red star, on the same hand, in the webbing between her ring and middle finger.

Jojo_Tat02Jojo_Tat03On the outer part of her right hand, she had the word “Truth” inscribed.

Jojo_Tat04In a bit of a playful mood, JoJo got the design on a T-Rex skeleton on her left forearm.

Jojo_Tat06Finally, wrapped around her right wrist, JoJo has Serenity Prayer etched in black ink with a few words inked in green.

Jojo_Tat05(Editor’s Note:  After the Steal Her Style article came out, JoJo added a 14th tattoo to her collection, a map of the world on her right wrist):

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Sharknado Edition): Cassie Scerbo

CScerbo_Pic05     One of the great regrets of the past 12 months of my life is that I have not yet been able to watch the cinematic masterpiece known as “Sharknado”.  I find it shocking that a film starring such acting heavyweights as Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, and dealing with the very real threat of sharks causing havoc in urban environments after being deposited there by water spouts, has not run the table during awards season.

cscerbo_pic07    Ok…. while “Sharknado” is much more like to make the TV Movie Hall of Shame than to be remembered for anything fondly, it did introduce us to the young, incredibly attractive and tattooed actress, Cassie Scerbo.

cscerbo_pic06     Cassie is certainly no stranger to direct-to-video (or tv movie) cinema.  One of her earlier roles was in “Bring It On:  In It to Win It”.  If the title sounds familiar, it should.  This was the fourth installment of the “Bring It On” series.  Of course, the original, starring Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku, was the only one to be released in theaters (all the sequels were essentially the same film, just with a different cast).

CScerbo_Pic04    Miss Scerbo does seem to have a preference for energetic roles.  In “Bring It On”, she was obviously a cheerleader.  Before that, she spent two years as a member of one of the dance crews on the teen health-and-fitness series “Dance Revolution”.  More recently, she starred in the entire run of the ABC Family series “Make It or Break It”, where she portrayed a young, elite-level gymnast with aspirations of making the Olympics.

CScerbo_Pic02    Cassie has also dabbled in a singing career (before making her major ‘breakthrough’ in “Sharknado”).  While she was on the series “Dance Revolution”, the dance crew she was a member of was called Slumber Party Girls.  To cross-promote to show, the girls released an album of songs inspired by it.  While this did not instantly make any of them pop stars, Cassie is interested in continuing to pursue that path.

This athletic, natural disaster heroine plans to keep having fun with her acting roles.  She is returning to her “Sharknado” roots by starring in the next SyFy Channel epic “Bering Sea Beast” alongside Jonathan Lipnicki (you remember, the little kid from “Jerry Maguire”).  It should be fun to continue to follow her career.

CScerbo_Pic01      One of the great things about any young celebrity or athlete these days is that you can all but guarantee they will be sporting some nice body art.  Cassie Scerbo is no different.   She definitely has a lot of them.  Her most prominent tattoo adorns the back of her neck.  It is fancy script design that reads “I Breathe for You”.

CScerbo_Tat01     On the back of her right calf, she has a cute little heart design.

CScerbo_Tat04CScerbo_Tat05    Her remaining tattoos are numerous script designs on her feet, around her ankle, on her wrist and on her forearms.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (‘Domino’ Edition): Jessie J

JessieJ_Pic04       Very early in 2011, music fans were introduced to the reggae-infused pop stylings of London soul singer, Jessie J.  Looking like the quirky cousin of Lady Miss Kier from Dee-Lite (remember the song “Groove is in the Heart”?), Jessie J teamed with R&B hit-maker, B.o.B., to release the first catch tune of the year, “Price Tag”.  The tune was a worldwide smash, reaching the top of the charts in 4 different countries (it reach #23 on Billboard in the U.S.)

Jessie J without her makeup and wig

Jessie J without her makeup and wig

Jessie J was born Jessica Ellen Cornish in 1988.  She has had the performing bug in her blood since her earliest days.  She was educated at Colin’s Performing Arts School and even performed in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End performance of “Whistle Down the Wind” as an 11-year old.

JessieJ_Pic02     Being born into a family with two older sisters who were gifted academically in school put pressure on the younger Jessie, who didn’t feel she was ‘good at anything’.  However, performing opened the door to a passion she was good at.  She continued her musical education at the BRIT School for the Performing Arts, where she graduated alongside other hit-making soulful songstresses like Adele (who has been featured) and Leona Lewis (who will be featured).

JessieJ_Pic03     Jessie’s early endeavors as a professional musician including songwriting and supporting performance gigs.  One of her earliest ones was being the supporting act for Cyndi Lauper, as perfect a stylistic muse as Jessie J could find.  As a writer, she developed songs for Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, including Cyrus’ first big hit, “Party In the U.S.A.” (but we won’t hold that against Jessie ;-)).

JessieJ_Pic07         Jessie proved that “Price Tag” was not a one-hit wonder when, late in the summer of 2011, she released “Domino”.  “Domino” is such an fun, energetic song that it made a bigger splash than “Price Tag”, reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 (it is also a superior song, in my humble opinion).  Jessie J’s voice, manic stage persona and musical intuition has also won her many fans among music critics.  Jessie J followed her big 2011 by releasing her follow-up album, “Alive”, in 2013 to a generally successful reception among fans and critics.

JessieJ_Pic01     Jessie J’s personal life has had its share of struggles as she has battled medical issues, as well as learning to become comfortable with her sexual identity.  She suffered a stroke when she was 18 and has had to contend with panic attacks.  Jessie has been open about her bisexuality and believes that being a well-known public figure who talks about her own sexuality will help other girls who are struggling with their own identity (she is to be applauded for that).

JessieJ_Pic06     Jessie J certain is a huge fan of body art.  Even in her heavily made up, and costumed, persona in the video for “Price Tag”, you could see that she has a tattoo on her right wrist.  It reads ‘Stand Up’ with a little heart beneath it.

JessieJ_Tat05   Jessie has a goofy little tattoo on the back of her left calf.  It is a stick figure sitting cross-legged, flashing a peace sign.

JessieJ_Tat07   Behind Jessie’s left ear, she has an inverted treble clef, combined with a bass clef to form a heart design.

JessieJ_Tat04    Jessie’s largest design runs along side her right hip and up her torso.  It is a lyric from her own single “Who We Are” with a trail of stars before and after the lyric.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day: Keke Palmer

KPalmer_Pic06     When you see child stars who captivate you with exceptional performances, you hope to see that they can continue to have success and avoid becoming one of those cautionary horror stories that so many young actors and actresses have become.  So, when you see someone like Keke Palmer arrive in adulthood with a firm and stable foundation and career, it restores some faith.

KPalmer_Pic07     Keke (who was born Lauren Keyana Palmer and goes by this nickname) made her acting debut at age 10 with a small role in the Ice Cube film “Barbershop 2:  Back in Business”, but she first captured audiences’ hearts as the title character in the family Spelling Bee drama “Akeelah and the Bee” (where she got to perform alongside such acting heavyweights as Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett).

KPalmer_Pic04    At the same time, Keke showed she was multi-talented by releasing her debut album, “So Uncool”, which contained the catchy single “Keep it Movin'” (you can watch it here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMJ0jnKOCHs).  She also performed in a few music videos, including a powerful role a young pregnant girl in the Mary J. Blige/Ludacris song “Runaway Love”

KPalmer_Pic03

Following these early successes, Keke did the rite of passage for all child stars by getting her own show on Nickelodeon (some go the Disney route, instead) with her 3-year stint as the lead character in “True Jackson”.  She also sang the theme song for the show.  At the same time, she became a fashionista by helping design a “True Jackson” clothing line for Walmart.

KPalmer_Pic02    Keke also exercised her philanthropic muscles by becoming an advocate for the Girl Scouts and YWCA, and by participating in several anti-bullying and anti-abuse campaigns.   Among the campaigns she has joined is ‘Save Our Daughters’, an anti-bullying effort that encourages people worldwide to take an oath to stand against bullying.

KPalmer_Pic01

Keke and fellow “New 2 Tats” cutie, Lily Collins

Keke’s most recent project is an extraordinarily high profile and challenging one.   She is portraying the one and only Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas in the VH1 biopic, “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story”, about the seminal female R&B group TLC.  Watching the movie, you need to remind yourself that it is not the real Chilli portraying herself.  Keke and Chilli could have been separated at birth, and Keke worked closely with her inspiration to get all the moves down.  Keke is also keeping her music passion going with several mixtape releases and plans to work on another full album.

KPalmer_Pic05    Of course, no feature would be complete without the body art, and Keke is quite an avid fan of tattoos.  Her first one that she proudly shows off is a quote from Aristotle on the inside of her left bicep.  It reads “we are what we repeatedly do.  excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”

KPalmer_Tat05KPalmer_Tat01KPalmer_Tat04    Another tattoo is a quote “don’t cast thy pearls before swine”.  I’m not quite sure where it is located on her.  But, since she exclaimed on Twitter that she got a tattoo in the same spot that Demi Lovato did, I suspect it’s on one of her forearms.

KPalmer_Tat03    Finally, Keke has recently been spotted with two adorable interlocked heart outlines behind her right ear.
