Hottie Ink Update (250th Feature Edition!): Jennifer Stone

It has been awhile since I last posted a feature on ‘New 2 Tats’.  It has been one of those situations where the job can sometimes get in the way of a hobby (or ‘labor of love’, as I have long referred to this blog).  I think a great celebrity to help get the ball rolling again is Jennifer Stone.

JenStone_Update_Pic02   It has been absolutely no secret that one of the all-time favorites here at “New 2 Tats” is Selena Gomez (a former child star who, despite the pressures of growing up in the harsh spotlight of fame… made even stronger by her former high profile relationship with Justin Bieber…. has managed to stay fairly grounded….   and she has a great love of body art).

JenStone_Update_Pic01    However, Selena’s fellow child star, and co-star of Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place”, Jennifer Stone is fast becoming another big favorite.  While her post-“Wizards” career has been quieter than Selena’s, one only needs to follow her on Instagram and Twitter to see she’s making moves and enjoying life.  One can also see exactly how much her love of tattoos has grown.

JenStone_Update_Pic03    When I first published a feature on Jennifer, she just had one widely-known tattoo (though, I gather, she had already acquired others at that point).  That first tattoo of her’s was not a tiny, hard to see design.  She went bold with the bible verse Ecclesiastes 3:1 just beneath her shoulders.  She first showed it off elegantly on the red carpet in a gorgeous black dress.

Jennifer now finds herself spending time working on many different endeavors, including modeling and music, while still keeping and ear to ground for the next good acting opportunity.  She recently participated in a Project Mermaids photo shoot, an environmental charity where many celebrities pose in mermaid outfits to help bring awareness and raise funds for protecting beaches and oceans.

JenStone_Update_Pic04     Jennifer also uses social media show the fun she is having in life, such as when running a race, or going skydiving.

One of the more prominent tattoos that is seen on Jennifer is an Italian phrase circling her left wrist (I do not have the translation).

Jennifer also has another foreign phrase running along the inside of her right wrist.

During her Project Mermaids photo shoot, she showed off what appears to a be a gorgeous piece of body art on her torso.  Available photos have not been able to show a clear depiction of the design, but it looks stunning.

Jennifer’s most recent turn under the tattoo needle is an old-style pocket watch design, which includes the phrase ‘Made in Texas’ on one half (she was born there), and a quote by Tennessee Williams from his ‘Catastrophe of Success’ essay on the other half.  A later photo of Jennifer with friends at the beach shows this design appears on her right thigh (the photo also shows another script tattoo underneath her left breast).

The boldness and enthusiasm with which Jennifer approaches body art all but guarantees we will be treated to more stunning tattoos from her in the future.  I can tell from following her on social media that she is going to have some entertaining projects coming up in the future as well.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Historical Enchantress Edition): Natalie Dormer

In recent years, blonde British beauty, Natalie Dormer has become a true ‘go to’ actress for a diverse number of roles, many of which are historical in nature.  Natalie’s ability to combine her stunning looks with a sharp-edged personality makes her performances the true show-stealers in many movies and television series.

Born in Reading, England, Natalie first came to the attention of wide audiences when she played the ill-fated Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII, in Showtime’s sensationalized dramatization of that Henry’s reign, called “The Tudors”.  In demonstrating a thespianic fearlessness that would become a hallmark of later roles, Natalie received strong positive reviews for her performance, even securing two Gemini Award nominations.

Much of Natalie’s varied talents can be traced to a rich upbringing.  In her school days, her academic achievements led to her being head girl.  She also traveled globally as a member of her school’s public debate team.  She also was studied dance.  Natalie eventually aspired to attend the University of Cambridge, but did not get the necessary exam scores to gain admission.  So, she turned her focus to studying drama at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Acting seemed to be right call for Natalie.  For an actress who only made her debut just 10 years ago, she feels like she has been a presence for much longer.  That 2005 debut, in the film “Casanova”, based loosely on the life of the famous/infamous Giacomo Casanova (played by Heath Ledger), flashed her potential.  Originally slated to have a much smaller role, Natalie’s gifted comedic timing convinced director, Lasse Hallstrom, to expand her screen time.  While the film wasn’t terribly successful, it did get Natalie noticed, and helped her land her breakthrough role.

That breakthrough role was as Anne Boleyn in “The Tudors”.  Playing the tempestuous, and doomed, second wife of Henry VIII necessitated that Natalie bare herself physically and emotionally.  The highly-rated series and performance ensured that the Natalie would continue to be a sought after actress.  After the conclusion of her role as Boleyn, she made a foray into the Marvel Universe as Private Lorraine in “Captain America:  The First Avenger” (which included ‘New 2 Tats’ hottie, Hayley Atwell)  It was one of numerous television and film roles that kept her busy over the next several years.

The last couple of years have seen Natalie latch onto significant roles in two of the biggest franchises in the world:  “Game of Thrones” on HBO and “The Hunger Games” film series.  In “Game of Thrones”, she portrays the cunning Margaery Tyrell and, in “The Hunger Games” (the two-part “Mockingjay” finale) she is chief propagandist, Cressida.  She has also managed to score a guest role in the Sherlock Holmes-inspired series “Elementary”, alongside Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu.  Whatever the future holds for Natalie, one can be certain it will continue to involve her becoming a bigger star on the big and small screen.

NatDormer_Pic05    While Natalie has been filmed with numerous fake tattoos as Cressida in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay”, she actually does have some real ink of her own.  She shows that she is an enormous sci-fi geek with the following quote from “Dune” author, Frank Herbert’s, Litany of Fear passage, which reads “fear is the mind-killer”.  She says it is a reminder to take herself out of her comfort zone.  It is on her left forearm.

Hottie Ink Update: Selena Gomez gets Tattoo #4 !!

SelenaCover    It goes without saying that Selena Gomez is a huge favorite of “New 2 Tats”.  Each tattoo she gets is wonderfully feminine and fits her perfectly.  Midway through what has been a very trying year for Selena (including a short stay in rehab, continued off-and-on relationship with Justin Bieber, getting unnecessarily over-analyzed in the media and just the overall growing pains of a young woman still working to define who she is), she chose to treat herself to her FOURTH tattoo!  Before we show her new ink, lets recap her body art so far:

Tattoo # 1:  Music Note on her right wrist (which represents her true passion).

SelenaTat3Tattoo # 2:  Roman Numeral LXXVI (76) on the back of her neck [Represents the year of her mother’s birth].

SelenaTat2_01Tattoo # 3:  The quote “Jesus Strengthens Me” along her right hip (It is a reference to the Biblical verse Philippians 4:13)

Selena_Tat3_02Now, for the grand reveal of Selena’s new tattoo, which only appeared on her Instagram account today (though she apparently has had it for about a month).

SelenaG_Tat04_Tat01Along Selena’s right rib cage, and running partway across her back, is an Arabic phrase that means, “Love Yourself First”.  No doubt this has significant meaning to a woman learning the importance of her inner strength and confidence.  Of course, Selena doesn’t let anyone put a needle her to skin other than ‘tattoo artist the to stars’, Bang Bang.

Here’s hoping this means that ONLY Bang Bang will do her body art… and not that tattoo # 4 is her last one.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (JoJo Edition): Joanna Levesque

Singer/Actress, Joanna Levesque, better known as JoJo, has been a performer nearly her entire life.  She has been a tattoo enthusiast almost her entire adult life.

Jojo_Pic05Born in 1990, JoJo was swept up in that wave of talent shows in the early 2000’s (beginning with “American Idol” before taking on numerous different forms).  She was a contestant on 2003’s “America’s Most Talented Kids”.  (This show was notable for introducing audiences to 2004 “Idol” runner-up, Diana DeGarmo, and 2007 “Idol” champion, Jordin Sparks).  JoJo made an impression and was quickly signed to the Blackground Records label.

Jojo_Pic02    The Vermont-born, Massachusetts native soon released a self-titled debut album.  While it was notable for drawing attention to Joanna’s soulful vocal range, this album was also controversial for songs that were a bit age-inappropriate for a 13-year old (most notably, the lead single, “Leave (Get Out)”).  The album was successful, reaching #4 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Jojo_Pic03     After her early musical success, JoJo (going by her actual name, Joanna Levesque) made her forays onto the big screen.  In the spring of 2006, she starred alongside fellow starlets, Emma Roberts and Sara Paxton in the tween comedy “Aquamarine”.  Later that year, Joanna starred in another family comedy, “RV”, as the daughter of Robin Williams and Cheryl Hines traveling on a disastrous family vacation.

Jojo_Pic04   2006 also saw the release of JoJo’s second album, “The High Road”.  With songs that were more age-relevant, “The High Road” also proved to be more successful.  It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, while the lead single “Too Little Too Late” also reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jojo_Pic06    As JoJo has become an adult, she has continued to focus on the next steps in her acting and singing careers.  On the acting front, she has had guest-starring roles on popular television series such as the “Hawaii Five-0”, and had a leading role in the recently released comedy film “G.B.F”.  On the singing side, JoJo recently resolved a dispute with Blackground Records and left them to join the Atlantic label.  She has released an EP and is working on her next full-length album, while also performing at this year’s SXSW festival.

When she’s not acting or singing, Joanna is active in numerous charities like Make-A-Wish, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and World Vision.

Jojo_Pic07    One thing that has become obvious as JoJo has grown up is how much she loves body art.  This recent article on Steal Her Style indicates that she has at least 13 tattoos (recent photos show a 14th), though her collection could very well include more as of this posting.  I have done my best to include all them here.

The tattoo that is probably the most significant for her is a treble clef on her left ring finger.  She says it represents that she’s ‘married to music’ and, until her future husband places a ring on that finger, the whole world will know this about her.

Jojo_Tat01Keeping with the musical theme, on in the inside of her right ear, JoJo has two music notes (as well as three red dots).  The meaning of the music notes is obvious, but the red dots are there just because she thinks they look cool.

Jojo_Tat07A wonderfully feminine style of tattoo that many women get is foot tattoos.  JoJo is no different.  She has several tattoos on her feet that are very cute.  One is a constellation of stars running down the top of her right foot.

Jojo_Tat12The other is on the inside of JoJo’s left ankle, she has a heart with a West African symbol that stands for “By God’s grace, all will be well”.

Jojo_Tat13    JoJo has other themes in her body art.  She is very proud of her New England roots and has two tattoos to symbolize it.  On the right side of her rib cage, she has a red outline of Massachusetts.  The other is on the back of her neck and has her last name followed by the state motto of New Hampshire, “Live Free or Die”.

JoJo definitely seems to be a fan of the red ink tattoos (not unlike Ellie Goulding or Amber Heard).  She has the phrase ‘ever to excel’ running down the right side of her torso, just above the hip, in red ink.

Jojo_Tat11Continuing to show her passion for music, JoJo shows an exquisite design on her back that has the phrase ‘love & music’ set against a sheet of musical notes (This is my favorite of all of her tattoos).

Jojo_Tat10JoJo has many tattoos on her hand.  Among them are a 4-leaf clover below the knuckle on her right ring finger and a red star, on the same hand, in the webbing between her ring and middle finger.

Jojo_Tat02Jojo_Tat03On the outer part of her right hand, she had the word “Truth” inscribed.

Jojo_Tat04In a bit of a playful mood, JoJo got the design on a T-Rex skeleton on her left forearm.

Jojo_Tat06Finally, wrapped around her right wrist, JoJo has Serenity Prayer etched in black ink with a few words inked in green.

Jojo_Tat05(Editor’s Note:  After the Steal Her Style article came out, JoJo added a 14th tattoo to her collection, a map of the world on her right wrist):

Hottie Ink Update (Awesome Ellie Ink Edition): Ellie Goulding gets 2 more Tattoos!

Ellie parties with Katy and Lorde (Lorde will actually throw her hands up in the air, as long as she’s not told to)

It’s nearly impossible to not fall in love with Ellie Goulding.  In addition to be being both sexy and cute, she has such a wonderful, angelic voice.  She also continues to display a growing love of body art.  The “Burn” singer had already shown off two cute ink pieces.  The first was a little red triangle on her right wrist (which just represents her love of triangles…. so, the Illuminati conspiracy theorists can chill out).  The second was a white ink arrow on her right index finger (which she got while filming the music video for “I Need Your Love” and included it in the video.)

Since the last “New 2 Tats” feature on Ellie, the British songstress has continued her high-energy music career, with numerous tour stops while staying committed to her running and recording.  She has also scored the featured track on the soundtrack for the movie “Divergent”.  The song is called “Beating Heart”.

Now, on to Ellie’s new tattoos.  The first new one (her third) is another red ink tattoo.  This time it is on her left wrist.  It is a Tibetan mantra that reads “Om mani padme hum”, which means “jewel of the lotus”.

EllieG_Update3_Tat05EllieG_Update3_Tat01Tattoo #4 stayed with the lotus theme, and showed Ellie getting much bolder with her body art.  This time, she got a black ink lotus flower on her right rib cage.  This is an extraordinarily well designed tattoo and it fits Ellie beautifully.

EllieG_Update3_Tat03EllieG_Update3_Tat04EllieG_Update3_Tat02Ellie’s most recent work was done by Dr. Woo from the Shamrock Social Club.  Dr. Woo’s stellar work is gaining such notoriety that he recently got his own feature in Buzzfeed.

We certainly haven’t heard the last of Ellie’s incredible voice.  I suspect we also have not witnessed the last of her body art.  As she continues to get inked, “New 2 Tats” will continue to feature it.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Drive Angry Edition): Amber Heard

A_Heard_Pic02    In 2004, actress/model, Amber Heard, first came to the attention of audiences when she made her big screen acting debut in one of the better football movies ever filmed, “Friday Night Lights”.  It was a critical success (obtaining an 81% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes), spawned an enormously successful spin-off television series and helped boost the careers of the actors who starred in it.

A_Heard_Pic04    It seems fitting that this Texas-born beauty would star in a film about the biggest obsession in her home state.  That same year, Heard, whose only previous acting credits included a few country music videos, also made her television debut on the short-lived WB series, “Jack & Bobby”.

A_Heard_Pic06     This early success helped Amber obtain new acting gigs.  She had guest roles on the mid-decade ‘epic’ teen drama, “The O.C”, and on the crime procedural, “Criminal Minds”.  In 2006, her next big film role came about.  She was in the Nick Cassavetes film, “Alpha Dog”, a surprise hit based on a real life murder scandal.  She played Alma, one of the party girls who got intimate with Zack Mazursky (Anton Yelchin), who was the doomed protagonist.

A_Heard_Pic03     The next year, Amber’s career continued to grow.  She had a single episode role in the very fun David Duchovny hedonism-fest, “Californication”, before getting a regular gig on television in the CW teen soap opera, “Hidden Palms” (created by “Dawson’s Creek” mastermind, Kevin Williamson).  She soon became a regular in the ‘hot girl’ roles in Frat Pack films like “Pineapple Express” and the hilarious “Zombieland”.

A_Heard_Pic05     High profile roles would soon present themselves for Amber.  She got a lead role in the action thriller, “Drive Angry”, alongside the manic Nicolas Cage.  She also got another small screen acting gig in 2011’s “The Playboy Club”, a show that seemed to have strong potential, but its underwhelming writing and production doomed it to a short run.

A_Heard_Pic07     In the 2011, Amber starred in “Rum Diary” alongside the legendary Johnny Depp.  The bisexual Heard (she came out, publicly, at a GLAAD event in 2010) had just recently broken up with long-time girlfriend, photographer Tasya van Ree.  “Rum Diary” was the salve she needed for a broken heart.  She and Depp fell in love and became engaged over Christmas 2013.  In the acting realm, Amber has an action-thriller, “3 Days to Kill” about to open.

While following Amber’s career, I heard talk of her having a tattoo.  The location and description of it, however, we always very vague.  As a result, I was not able to locate any definitive pictures of her ink.  Fortunately, in some recent photo shoots, Amber has been much more revealing about her body art.   On her left rib cage, is a script tattoo (in red ink) that reads “Te amo como se aman ciertas cosa oscuras, secretamente, entre la sombra y el alma”, a quote from Chilean author, Pablo Neruda, that means, in English, “I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, in secret, between the shadow and the soul”.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (200th Tattoo Feature!): Leona Lewis

LeonaLewis_Pic01   I am kicking off my 200th feature on “New 2 Tats” with exotic British chanteuse, Leona Lewis.  Late in 2007, American audiences were treated to Leona’s first big hit on stateside radio: “Bleeding Love”, a very emotionally powerful ballad about a love that is going bad and the pleading of one lover to the other over how distraught she is that this is where they are.  It clearly struck a chord with listeners in this country as it had three separate stints at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2008 (It was even ranked #2 on the year end Billboard chart for 2008).

LeonaLewis_Pic02     Leona Lewis’ exotic beauty comes from a mix of Afro-Guyanese ancestry on her father’s side and Welsh, Italian and Irish on her mother’s side.  Born in Islington, London, she has had the arts in her blood from her earliest days.  As a child, she attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School before she moved on to the Italia Conti Academy (coincidentally, that is where ‘New 2 Tats’ beauty, Martine McCutcheon also studied)

LeonaLewis_Pic04        Leona’s vocal education included opera, jazz and blues.  When you listen to her sing, you can feel the range, power and flexibility in her voice that allows her to ‘own’ each of those styles.  Early on, she tried the independent artist route and cut some demos with a couple different labels.  Unfortunately, these demos did not generate any kind of sustainable interest.  When she was considering putting her musical ambitions on hold for awhile, her longtime boyfriend suggested that she try out for “The X Factor”, the British talent show that “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell ran simultaneously with “Idol”.

LeonaLewis_Pic05     Well, “The X Factor” was absolutely the right call.  Leona completely dominated the competition in Series 3.  She never finished worse than third place in any week, and she finished in first place in 8 of the 10 weeks of the show, including the finale where she won the series.  Drawing inspiration from the first “American Idol” champion, Kelly Clarkson, Leona’s first post-victory single was “A Moment Like This”.  British audiences loved it and the song ended up winning the coveted UK ‘Christmas #1 Single’ title for 2006.

LeonaLewis_Pic06     This initial success led to her signing with music mogul, Clive Davis, in the United States.  The connections in the States got her hooked up with power producers like Dallas Austin, Ne-Yo and Walter Afanasieff.  Not long after this, she began work on her major-label debut album, “Spirit”.  She lucked into her epic hit song “Bleeding Love”.  The song, written by Ryan Tedder (of One Republic), was original supposed to be sung by teen heartthrob, Jesse McCartney.  Jesse’s label said ‘no’.  So, he became a co-writer and the song went to Leona.  The rest, they say, is history.

LeonaLewis_Pic07      Leona’s follow-up single, “Better in Time”, a softer love ballad, didn’t achieve near the success of “Bleeding Love”, reaching only #53 on the Billboard Hot 100.  However, despite having yet to ascend to the top of the charts again, Leona has regularly released new albums and achieved the kind of following that has allowed her to continue living her dream.  She also supports the non-profit group Little Kids Rock, which is dedicated to preserving music education for children across the United States, especially in financially disadvantaged districts where music programs would be the first to be canceled.

LeonaLewis_Pic03     Of course, being beautiful and having a gifted voice is not all there is to Leona.  She also has some wonderful body art.  Leona’s most noticeable tattoo also shows committed she is to the art form.  Running down the length of her spine is a poem she wrote about horses, which are her favorite animals.  It reads:

“Their beauty captures every eye, a gift from God for all mankind, they lend us wings so we may fly, to ride a horse is to ride the sky”

LeonaLewis_Tat01LeonaLewis_Tat08    In addition to that amazing ink piece, she has another adorable horse-related tattoo.  On the outside of her left wrist, she has a little horseshoe design.

LeonaLewis_Tat02LeonaLewis_Tat03    Another very cute design of Leona’s is a peace symbol just underneath her left ear.

LeonaLewis_Tat04LeonaLewis_Tat05Above her bikini line, she has a very nice floral tattoo.

Leona’s most recent tattoo is an elegant feather she has running down the front of her right shoulder.

Her one other tattoo is an Arabic script design on her left wrist.  It was a message she shared with her long-time boyfriend, the one who encouraged her to try out for “The X Factor”.  They have since gone their separate ways, and Leona has chosen to keep the tattoo’s meaning to herself.
