Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (The Force Awakens Edition [No Spoilers]): Daisy Ridley

If ever there was a young actress who entered a year poised for the biggest breakthrough of her career (or anyone’s career, for that matter), it is London’s Daisy Ridley in 2015.

You may be familiar with a successful ‘niche’ movie series called “Star Wars”.  In the late 90’s/early 2000’s, it got derailed by things called Jar Jar, pod-racing, and midi-chlorians.  Then, a small company called Disney took over the series and let someone little-known director named JJ Abrams oversee a new series of films.  Does any of this ring a bell?

Before you start sticking your middle finger at your computer screen… YES, I am kidding… The biggest pop culture phenomenon in the past half-century has been “Star Wars”.  But, the thrill and excitement that these movies created ran completely out of steam, courtesy of prequel trilogy (which was good in some parts, mediocre in most others, and when it was bad, it was ‘burn the film’ bad).

Fortunately, “Star Wars” creator, George Lucas, sold Lucasfilms to the Disney Corporation.  Disney then promptly decided to make new Star Wars films, and told Lucas (whose complete autonomy made the prequels a mess) that he would have nothing to do with making these films.  Abrams, who had already helmed the very successful reboot of the “Star Trek” series, was given the director’s chair for this even larger task:  restoring the faith of a badly disappointed fan base.

One of Abrams’ first decisions was to hire largely unknown actors to play major roles. This could be successful, such as with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher for “A New Hope”, or it could be really bad, such as with Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen in the prequels. Having seen “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, all I will say about the movie is that Abrams chose wisely with John Boyega and (the subject of this blog entry) Daisy Ridley. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing the film on-screen again, and I rarely see movies more than once in the theater.

Daisy Ridley was an inspired choice.  The Westminster-born actress brings such a well-placed enthusiasm and energy to the role of Rey, that fans can’t help but be won over by her (though, there will always be some spoilsports).

Ridley’s acting resume, before landing “Star Wars”, consisted of minor roles on British television series like “Youngers”, “Silent Witness” and “Mr. Selfridge”.  Such a star-making leap can be overwhelming for some actors and actresses.  Ridley, however, seems to be handling it just fine.  This includes her poking fun at her audition on “Saturday Night Live” and showing a very grounded, humorous personality on her social media accounts.  Daisy is going to be very busy over the next few years with “Star Wars”, and I think that is something that all fans of that era from a ‘long time ago in a galaxy far, far away’ will very much benefit from.

Of course, as much as Daisy Ridley is quickly becoming every fan-boy’s crush, she wouldn’t be on the blog if she didn’t have some ink.  In a move that may have suggested her future destiny, Daisy got a cute design of three stars tattooed on her left foot.  Whether or not she gets any more body art remains to be seen.  In the meantime, she will be contending with one of the new trends on mega-stardom…. fans getting tattoos of HER!  ūüôā

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Little Miss Sunshine Edition): Abigail Breslin

Ever since the exuberant character, Olive Hooper, answered the phone and screamed her way (with joy) into audience’s hearts, actress Abigail Breslin has been a major player on the Hollywood scene.

(Abbie with her brother, actor Spencer Breslin) (Credit: Abigail’s IG account)

Acting has been family affair for the New York-born Breslin since she was just a ‘wee tot’. ¬†Both of her older brothers, Ryan and Spencer, are also actors. ¬†After starring in few commercials as a baby, she made her big screen debut, alongside Spencer (and some guy named Mel Gibson), in the 2002 science-fiction blockbuster, “Signs” (also known as M. Night Shyamalan’s last good movie). ¬†She was just 6 when the movie was released, and only 5 when principal photography concluded.

(little Abigail protecting her mind from aliens in “Signs”)

Abigail received very high marks for her performance in “Signs”. ¬†She showed she could handle material with greater depth to it, ensuring that she would not be pigeon-holed to ‘cute kid’ roles throughout her youth. ¬†This got her a small part in “The Princess Diaries 2” and a much larger role with Kate Hudson in “Raising Helen”. ¬†She then got a part in the third installment of the Tim Allen “Santa Clause” series, “The Santa Clause 3: ¬†The Escape Clause”. ¬†In those last two movies, she once again got to act with her brother, Spencer.

Then Abigail landed her major breakthrough role as the precocious Olive Hooper in the 2006 indie super-hit “Little Miss Sunshine”. ¬†She portrays a young girl who just found out she has been selected for the ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ beauty pageant in California and has to travel 800 miles in two days, in a broken down bus, with a dysfunctional family that can only be described as ‘eclectic’, in order to compete. ¬†Her performance was very well received; so much so that she actually received an Academy Award nomination for Best Support Actress, making her one of the youngest nominees ever (she eventually lost to Jennifer Hudson for “Dreamgirls”).

After two more supporting roles in big-name romantic ‘dramedies’, “No Reservations” and “Definitely, Maybe”, Abigail scored her first lead roles. ¬†She was the title character in “Nim’s Island” and the eponymous ‘american girl’ in “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl”. ¬†She then earned oodles of ‘nerd cred’ with a hilarious role in the end-of-world comedy “Zombieland”.

Abigail has managed to score additional heavyweight acting roles in recent films, such as “Ender’s Game” and “August: Osage County”. ¬†This fall, she will be starring alongside other young adult stars like Emma Roberts and Keke Palmer in the Fox horror-comedy “Scream Queens”. ¬†An accurate thing to say with regards to Abigail is ‘watch this space’, because there are going to be many, many more high-end projects coming her way.

Upon turning 19 years old, Abigail wasted very little time showing much she wanted to join ‘Club Ink’. ¬†A birthday gift from her brother, Spencer, was a trip to a tattoo studio. ¬†She got a cute design of the planet, Saturn, and three stars on her left wrist.

The love of tattoos did not end with just one. ¬†Several weeks later, Abigail went back and got TWO MORE tattoos. ¬†One was her alien buddy, Alan, on her left shoulder (wonder if she knows him from her “Signs” days), and the title of the song “Holocene” by Bon Iver on one of her forearms (it’s a song that has great personal meaning for her). ¬†These two were done by Kaylyn Tattoos. ¬†Abigail liked the experience so much, she brought her mother along to get inked… and she got TWO of her own. ¬†:-).

Hottie Ink Update (Independent Wine Lover Edition): Miriam Pultro

One of the things I have loved best about running this blog is when I get positive feedback from the person I featured.  It shows me that people do enjoy this blog and continues to affirm how much they genuinely like talking about body art.  One of favorite features was the one I wrote last year on independent actress, Miriam Pultro.

My love of the all-to-brief science fiction epic “Firefly” is what led me to learn about Miriam in the first place. ¬†In 2010, a number of “Firefly” fans paid tribute to this awesome show by creating the fan film “Browncoats: Redemption”. ¬†It raised $100,000 for charity and gave fans another taste of the ‘verse that Serenity flew in. ¬†Miriam’s performance stood out, and her ink caught my attention, leading to the feature on her.

Miriam showing some of her ink, including her awesome Triskelion tattoo. (Photo credit: Tim Goodwin Photography: http://timgoodwinphotography.tumblr.com/)

Miriam had a very positive response to her tattoo feature, and even shared what was her newest tattoo at the time, the triskelion on her back. ¬†Her love of ink is one fun aspect about Miriam. ¬†Another is her passion for her craft and drive to succeed in acting. ¬†One only needs to watch her award-winning web series, “Mythos” (catch it here: ¬†http://www.mythosseries.com/), to see her talent for writing, storytelling and characterization. ¬†After the success of its first season, Miriam has already produced the show’s second season pilot.

It is futile to resist this Borg Queen at Halloween (Instagram: http://instagram.com/miriampultro)

Following Miriam on social media gives you an intimate look at an actress working hard towards that big break. ¬†She candidly chronicles her disappointments along with her successes. ¬†Recently, she scored a spot in the popular ‘Lily Adams’ AT&T commercial series. ¬†She also recently starred in the family comedy/drama, “Homeward”. ¬†In the meantime, you can also learn about her love of wine (which she sure loves ūüėÄ ). ¬†The big break is destined to come for Miriam. ¬†When it does, I’m gonna be that guy that says “Hey, I knew about her way back when…”

Of course, while I like talking about Miriam’s love of wine and her growing resume, this feature exists because she has added more body art to her wonderful collection.

In¬†my original feature on Miriam, she had a cute constellation of stars along her upper hip. ¬†Since then, she has added the phrase that appears to say “One Feeling Only at a Time” underneath (It is a quote from Peter Pan).

Hottie Ink Update (Big Mama Stef Edition): Stefanie Dolson

StefDolsonUpdate_Pic01¬†¬† 2014 has been a big year for ‘Big Mama Stef’ (Stefanie Dolson’s alias).¬† When I wrote my first feature on Stefanie, she had just led the Connecticut Huskies to their second straight National Championship in basketball over Notre Dame.¬† Less than a week later, she was selected #6 overall in the WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics (and joined a little later by her teammate, Seattle Storm #7 pick, Bria Hartley, who was immediately traded to Washington).

StefDolsonUpdate_Pic02¬†¬†¬† A little later that summer, she joined her teammates from both UConn Men’s and Women’s championship squads at the White House to be honored by President Barack Obama.¬† Visits to the White House seem to always be an adventure for Stefanie.¬† After the 2013 title, she humorously gave President Obama a set of bunny ears.¬† In 2014, she found the stand behind the President a little too crowded and fell off.¬† She quickly recovered and, while turning bright red, had a good laugh about it with Obama.

StefDolsonUpdate_Pic03     Once the WNBA season started, Stefanie proved to be a strong player off the bench, averaging 6 points per game and helping lead the Mystics to the playoffs.  The highlight of her season is was a triple-overtime game against Los Angeles Sparks, where she recorded her first career double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds).  After the Mystics were eliminated, Stefanie began extensively traveling as part of USA Basketball, gaining many new friends and chronicling the experience on social media.

StefDolsonUpdate_Pic04¬†¬†¬† 2014 also showed off Stefanie’s growing love of body art, as she added two more to her collection.¬† No one can ever say that Stefanie does not put a lot of thought and consideration into her tattoos.¬† Her first two, which I covered in her first feature, were stars on her foot that she got along with her sisters and a Fleur-de-lis on her ankle to commemorate the 2013 National Championship, which UConn won in New Orleans.

Not wanting to play favorites with her National Championships, Stefanie got the Roman Numerals ‘IV-VIII-MMXIV’ etched on her left forearm.¬† This is for April 8th, 2014, the day UConn defeated Notre Dame to win the 2014 National Championship.

StefDolsonUpdate_Tat01    Sadly, Stefanie experienced the loss of her grandma over the summer.  Stefanie used tattoos as a touching way to express how important she was to her.

StefDolsonUpdate_Tat02   It is really refreshing to have a such a fun-loving (and ink-loving) person like Big Mama Stef as a part of the D.C. sports scene.  Hopefully, she will be here for a long time and help bring the Mystics the same kind of glory as the Huskies.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day: Vanessa Ferlito

VFerlito_Pic02¬†¬†¬† My first introduction to actress Vanessa Ferlito occurred during the third season of Keifer Sutherland’s magnum opus, “24”.¬† Vanessa portrayed Claudia Hernandez, the reluctant girlfriend of Hector Salazar (Vincent Laresca), a Mexican drug lord with access to deadly virus that Jack Bauer (Sutherland) has gone undercover to stop.¬† She was very good in this role and she displayed her real life love of body art.

VFerlito_Pic01   Vanessa (who is of Italian descent, but known mostly for playing Latina roles) had a difficult early childhood.  Born in Brooklyn, New York, she suffered the loss of her father to a heroin overdose when she was just two years old.  Fortunately, she had a strong support system with her mother and, when her mother remarried, her stepfather, who raised her while also running a Brooklyn hair salon.

VFerlito_Pic06¬†¬†¬† Vanessa made her acting debut in 2002, staring in the sexual comedy “On_Line”, where she portrayed one of the stars of an adult webcam site.¬† It received viewings at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals.¬† Vanessa soon got other small roles in shows like “Third Watch”, “Law & Order” and the Edward Norton film “25th Hour”.

VFerlito_Pic03¬†¬†¬† 2003-2004 was Vanessa’s breakthrough period.¬† She had her major role in “24”.¬† She also had a cameo on the “Sopranos” and “CSI: Miami”, while also being in the summer blockbuster “Spiderman 2”.

VFerlito_Pic07¬†¬†¬† The next years saw her as one of the stars in the murder-comedy (yes, you read that right), “Man of the House” (starring Tommy Lee Jones).¬† She also parlayed her guest spot on “CSI: Miami” into a regular role on its spinoff “CSI: NY”.¬† Most notable during this time was her performance as Arlene in Quentin Tarantino’s ode to 70’s pulp films, “Grindhouse” (She was in the segment “Death Proof”).

VFerlito_Pic05¬†¬† She scored roles in some more major theatrical releases, such as “Julie and Julia” and “Wall Street:¬† Money Never Sleeps” before making a move back to the small screen for a significant lead role.¬† She stars in the USA drama “Graceland”.¬† In it, she portrays FBI agent ‘Charlie’ DeMarco, one of several undercover law enforcement officers lodging together while they work major cases.¬† Already in its second season, we should be seeing more of Vanessa for the foreseeable future.

VFerlito_Pic04¬†¬†¬† Vanessa’s role in “24” showed she has an appreciation of body art.¬† A dream catcher could be seen on her left shoulder.¬† This was not for the role.¬† It was her real life tattoo.

On her left wrist, she has a tribute to her late father with ‘Dad’ and a star inscribed.

Vanessa also appears to have a design of a spade or an apple on her right wrist.

On the back of her left bicep, she has an unknown design.

VFerlito_Tat05¬†¬†¬† Finally, on her right bicep, she has the date ‘9-21-07’ inscribed, for the birth date of her son, Vince.

I could not locate any official, or fan, websites for Vanessa.  I was not able to find a verified Twitter account for her either.

However, Vanessa seems to have a presence on Instagram:  http://instagram.com/vanessaferlito

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Australian Idol Edition): Jessica Mauboy

JMauboy_Pic6    Australia has produced more than its fair share of talented individuals in athletics and in the arts (many of whom have a strong appreciation for body art).  One Australian who seems poised for a major mainstream breakthrough is Jessica Mauboy.

JMauboy_Pic1¬†¬†¬† Mauboy, who is an Indigenous Australian (her father is from Indonesia and mother is from the Kaku Yalanji tribe of Far North Queensland, Australia), made her first major breakthrough in 2012’s hit musical comedy/drama “The Sapphires”.¬† In that film, Jessica portrays Julie McCrae, a member of a 1960’s female singing group made up of Indigenous Australians (and bearing the name of the movie’s title), who gain fame from their touring performances, including for the troops in Vietnam.¬† “The Sapphires” won an AACTA Award (Australia’s version of the Oscars) for Best Picture, and Jessica won an individual AACTA for Supporting Actress.

JMauboy_Pic4¬†¬†¬†¬† Jessica garnered her first attention, at age 14, during a local music festival.¬† This showcase of her impressive voice lead to her singing with Sony Music Australia.¬† While this initial effort at a singing career didn’t take off, it gave Mauboy a taste of what she wanted.¬† Her next step was to audition for the 2006 edition of the Australian version of “American Idol”, appropriately titled “Australian Idol”.

JMauboy_Pic2¬†¬†¬† Despite having to deal with an unfortunate, and tone deaf, comment from judge Kyle Sandilands about her weight, Jessica made “Idol” a largely positive experience for herself.¬† Routinely receiving rave reviews from judges and fans, Jessica made it all the way to the finale (at the world-famous Sydney Opera House) before finishing as the runner-up to Damien Leith.¬† This success led Mauboy to re-signing with Sony Music Australia.

JMauboy_Pic5¬†¬†¬†¬† Jessica’s first post-“Idol” album was titled “The Journey”.¬† The name is representative of her “Australian Idol” experience and was a two-disc set that consisted of covers of some of her “Idol” songs and a DVD of her performances.¬† It reached #4 on the Australian Charts.¬† She followed that with her first album of original material, “Been Waiting”.¬† While it didn’t chart as well (only #11 on the Australian charts), it has been her best selling, earning a double platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).¬† In addition to her two other albums she has released, she has been very successful touring with two headlining tours, as well as supporting her style inspiration, Beyonce, on another tour.

JMauboy_Pic7¬†¬†¬† On the acting side, Jessica made her film debut, staying true to her Indigenous roots, in the Aboriginal musical, “Bran Nue Dae”.¬† Then, of course, there was her breakthrough success with “The Sapphires”.¬† When Jessica is not singing or acting, she is deeply engaged in philanthropic efforts.¬† These include her work with Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia, Woolworth’s Earn & Learn as well as numerous Aboriginal causes.¬† We should be hearing and seeing a lot more of this remarkable young star very soon.

JMauboy_Pic3    Jessica has a growing love of body art.  One of her most notable tattoos appears on the inside of her right ankle.  It is a butterfly surrounded by stars.  You get to see this pretty ink a lot because Jessica seems to prefer to pose for photos in a way that has this tattoo facing the camera.

JMauboy_Tat7JMauboy_Tat6JMauboy_Tat5JMauboy_Tat8Another one of Jessica’s tattoos appears on her upper back, just below the neck.¬† It reads, “J Mallie”.¬† According to Mauboy, it is represents her ‘fierce’ alter-ego, following the lead of her idol, Beyonce.

JMauboy_Tat4JMauboy_Tat1The only other tattoos I was able to find of her’s are a set of three tattoos that appear on her index, middle and ring fingers of her left hand.¬† The read “Love”, “Peace”, “Unity”.¬† These were inked on Jessica by Mahalo Design (an Australian tattoo studio specializing in cultural South Pacific style of Tatau).¬† They represent the key elements of Jessica’s life philosophy.¬† In keeping with a practice that I strongly encourage, Jessica was photographed while having the art applied.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (JoJo Edition): Joanna Levesque

Singer/Actress, Joanna Levesque, better known as JoJo, has been a performer nearly her entire life.  She has been a tattoo enthusiast almost her entire adult life.

Jojo_Pic05Born in 1990, JoJo was swept up in that wave of talent shows in the early 2000’s (beginning with “American Idol” before taking on numerous different forms).¬† She was a contestant on 2003’s “America’s Most Talented Kids”.¬† (This show was notable for introducing audiences to 2004 “Idol” runner-up, Diana DeGarmo, and 2007 “Idol” champion, Jordin Sparks).¬† JoJo made an impression and was quickly signed to the Blackground Records label.

Jojo_Pic02¬†¬†¬† The Vermont-born, Massachusetts native soon released a self-titled debut album.¬† While it was notable for drawing attention to Joanna’s soulful vocal range, this album was also controversial for songs that were a bit age-inappropriate for a 13-year old (most notably, the lead single, “Leave (Get Out)”).¬† The album was successful, reaching #4 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Jojo_Pic03¬†¬†¬†¬† After her early musical success, JoJo (going by her actual name, Joanna Levesque) made her forays onto the big screen.¬† In the spring of 2006, she starred alongside fellow starlets, Emma Roberts and Sara Paxton in the tween comedy “Aquamarine”.¬† Later that year, Joanna starred in another family comedy, “RV”, as the daughter of Robin Williams and Cheryl Hines traveling on a disastrous family vacation.

Jojo_Pic04¬†¬† 2006 also saw the release of JoJo’s second album, “The High Road”.¬† With songs that were more age-relevant, “The High Road” also proved to be more successful.¬† It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, while the lead single “Too Little Too Late” also reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jojo_Pic06¬†¬†¬† As JoJo has become an adult, she has continued to focus on the next steps in her acting and singing careers.¬† On the acting front, she has had guest-starring roles on popular television series such as the “Hawaii Five-0”, and had a leading role in the recently released comedy film “G.B.F”.¬† On the singing side, JoJo recently resolved a dispute with Blackground Records and left them to join the Atlantic label.¬† She has released an EP and is working on her next full-length album, while also performing at this year’s SXSW festival.

When she’s not acting or singing, Joanna is active in numerous charities like Make-A-Wish, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and World Vision.

Jojo_Pic07    One thing that has become obvious as JoJo has grown up is how much she loves body art.  This recent article on Steal Her Style indicates that she has at least 13 tattoos (recent photos show a 14th), though her collection could very well include more as of this posting.  I have done my best to include all them here.

The tattoo that is probably the most significant for her is a treble clef on her left ring finger.¬† She says it represents that she’s ‘married to music’ and, until her future husband places a ring on that finger, the whole world will know this about her.

Jojo_Tat01Keeping with the musical theme, on in the inside of her right ear, JoJo has two music notes (as well as three red dots).  The meaning of the music notes is obvious, but the red dots are there just because she thinks they look cool.

Jojo_Tat07A wonderfully feminine style of tattoo that many women get is foot tattoos.  JoJo is no different.  She has several tattoos on her feet that are very cute.  One is a constellation of stars running down the top of her right foot.

Jojo_Tat12The other is on the inside of JoJo’s left ankle, she has a heart with a West African symbol that stands for “By God’s grace, all will be well”.

Jojo_Tat13¬†¬†¬† JoJo has other themes in her body art.¬† She is very proud of her New England roots and has two tattoos to symbolize it.¬† On the right side of her rib cage, she has a red outline of Massachusetts.¬† The other is on the back of her neck and has her last name followed by the state motto of New Hampshire, “Live Free or Die”.

JoJo definitely seems to be a fan of the red ink tattoos (not unlike Ellie Goulding or Amber Heard).¬† She has the phrase ‘ever to excel’ running down the right side of her torso, just above the hip, in red ink.

Jojo_Tat11Continuing to show her passion for music, JoJo shows an exquisite design on her back that has the phrase ‘love & music’ set against a sheet of musical notes (This is my favorite of all of her tattoos).

Jojo_Tat10JoJo has many tattoos on her hand.  Among them are a 4-leaf clover below the knuckle on her right ring finger and a red star, on the same hand, in the webbing between her ring and middle finger.

Jojo_Tat02Jojo_Tat03On the outer part of her right hand, she had the word “Truth” inscribed.

Jojo_Tat04In a bit of a playful mood, JoJo got the design on a T-Rex skeleton on her left forearm.

Jojo_Tat06Finally, wrapped around her right wrist, JoJo has Serenity Prayer etched in black ink with a few words inked in green.

Jojo_Tat05(Editor’s Note:¬† After the Steal Her Style article came out, JoJo added a 14th tattoo to her collection, a map of the world on her right wrist):
