Hottie Ink Update (Big Bang Theory Edition): Kaley Cuoco

(credit: Ryan Sweeting)

I have noticed a pattern when it comes to New Year’s Eve and Kaley Cuoco.  On December 31st, 2012, I published a “New 2 Tats” about Penny from “Big Bang Theory”.  December 31st, 2013 turns out to have provided the inspiration for the next feature for the ‘fan boy’ #1 star.

(Ryan’s tattoos)

On that day, Kaley married professional tennis player, Ryan Sweeting.  Born in the Bahamas, Sweeting came to the United States to play the ‘sport of kings’.  While he has achieved a Men’s Singles ranking as high as #64, his biggest ‘love match’ occurred off the court.  In the middle of 2013, he and Kaley began dating.  The decided to end 2013 (and kick off 2014) with a bang and get hitched.

Kaley and Ryan marked their union with body art.  On Ryan’s left arm and on Kaley’s back, they each go the Roman Numerals signifying their wedding date:  XII, XXXI, XIII (12th Month, 31st Day, the year ending in 13).

In addition, Kaley seems to have added another piece of art.  In a recent Instagram post, in a bathing suit, she seems to be showing off a new tattoo on her left torso (although, I’m not able to tell what it is).

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (JoJo Edition): Joanna Levesque

Singer/Actress, Joanna Levesque, better known as JoJo, has been a performer nearly her entire life.  She has been a tattoo enthusiast almost her entire adult life.

Jojo_Pic05Born in 1990, JoJo was swept up in that wave of talent shows in the early 2000’s (beginning with “American Idol” before taking on numerous different forms).  She was a contestant on 2003’s “America’s Most Talented Kids”.  (This show was notable for introducing audiences to 2004 “Idol” runner-up, Diana DeGarmo, and 2007 “Idol” champion, Jordin Sparks).  JoJo made an impression and was quickly signed to the Blackground Records label.

Jojo_Pic02    The Vermont-born, Massachusetts native soon released a self-titled debut album.  While it was notable for drawing attention to Joanna’s soulful vocal range, this album was also controversial for songs that were a bit age-inappropriate for a 13-year old (most notably, the lead single, “Leave (Get Out)”).  The album was successful, reaching #4 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Jojo_Pic03     After her early musical success, JoJo (going by her actual name, Joanna Levesque) made her forays onto the big screen.  In the spring of 2006, she starred alongside fellow starlets, Emma Roberts and Sara Paxton in the tween comedy “Aquamarine”.  Later that year, Joanna starred in another family comedy, “RV”, as the daughter of Robin Williams and Cheryl Hines traveling on a disastrous family vacation.

Jojo_Pic04   2006 also saw the release of JoJo’s second album, “The High Road”.  With songs that were more age-relevant, “The High Road” also proved to be more successful.  It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, while the lead single “Too Little Too Late” also reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jojo_Pic06    As JoJo has become an adult, she has continued to focus on the next steps in her acting and singing careers.  On the acting front, she has had guest-starring roles on popular television series such as the “Hawaii Five-0”, and had a leading role in the recently released comedy film “G.B.F”.  On the singing side, JoJo recently resolved a dispute with Blackground Records and left them to join the Atlantic label.  She has released an EP and is working on her next full-length album, while also performing at this year’s SXSW festival.

When she’s not acting or singing, Joanna is active in numerous charities like Make-A-Wish, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and World Vision.

Jojo_Pic07    One thing that has become obvious as JoJo has grown up is how much she loves body art.  This recent article on Steal Her Style indicates that she has at least 13 tattoos (recent photos show a 14th), though her collection could very well include more as of this posting.  I have done my best to include all them here.

The tattoo that is probably the most significant for her is a treble clef on her left ring finger.  She says it represents that she’s ‘married to music’ and, until her future husband places a ring on that finger, the whole world will know this about her.

Jojo_Tat01Keeping with the musical theme, on in the inside of her right ear, JoJo has two music notes (as well as three red dots).  The meaning of the music notes is obvious, but the red dots are there just because she thinks they look cool.

Jojo_Tat07A wonderfully feminine style of tattoo that many women get is foot tattoos.  JoJo is no different.  She has several tattoos on her feet that are very cute.  One is a constellation of stars running down the top of her right foot.

Jojo_Tat12The other is on the inside of JoJo’s left ankle, she has a heart with a West African symbol that stands for “By God’s grace, all will be well”.

Jojo_Tat13    JoJo has other themes in her body art.  She is very proud of her New England roots and has two tattoos to symbolize it.  On the right side of her rib cage, she has a red outline of Massachusetts.  The other is on the back of her neck and has her last name followed by the state motto of New Hampshire, “Live Free or Die”.

JoJo definitely seems to be a fan of the red ink tattoos (not unlike Ellie Goulding or Amber Heard).  She has the phrase ‘ever to excel’ running down the right side of her torso, just above the hip, in red ink.

Jojo_Tat11Continuing to show her passion for music, JoJo shows an exquisite design on her back that has the phrase ‘love & music’ set against a sheet of musical notes (This is my favorite of all of her tattoos).

Jojo_Tat10JoJo has many tattoos on her hand.  Among them are a 4-leaf clover below the knuckle on her right ring finger and a red star, on the same hand, in the webbing between her ring and middle finger.

Jojo_Tat02Jojo_Tat03On the outer part of her right hand, she had the word “Truth” inscribed.

Jojo_Tat04In a bit of a playful mood, JoJo got the design on a T-Rex skeleton on her left forearm.

Jojo_Tat06Finally, wrapped around her right wrist, JoJo has Serenity Prayer etched in black ink with a few words inked in green.

Jojo_Tat05(Editor’s Note:  After the Steal Her Style article came out, JoJo added a 14th tattoo to her collection, a map of the world on her right wrist):

Hottie Ink Update (Awesome Ellie Ink Edition): Ellie Goulding gets 2 more Tattoos!

It’s nearly impossible to not fall in love with Ellie Goulding.  In addition to be being both sexy and cute, she has such a wonderful, angelic voice.  She also continues to display a growing love of body art.  The “Burn” singer had already shown off two cute ink pieces.  The first was a little red triangle on her right wrist (which just represents her love of triangles…. so, the Illuminati conspiracy theorists can chill out).  The second was a white ink arrow on her right index finger (which she got while filming the music video for “I Need Your Love” and included it in the video.)

Since the last “New 2 Tats” feature on Ellie, the British songstress has continued her high-energy music career, with numerous tour stops while staying committed to her running and recording.  She has also scored the featured track on the soundtrack for the movie “Divergent”.  The song is called “Beating Heart”.

Now, on to Ellie’s new tattoos.  The first new one (her third) is another red ink tattoo.  This time it is on her left wrist.  It is a Tibetan mantra that reads “Om mani padme hum”, which means “jewel of the lotus”.

EllieG_Update3_Tat05EllieG_Update3_Tat01Tattoo #4 stayed with the lotus theme, and showed Ellie getting much bolder with her body art.  This time, she got a black ink lotus flower on her right rib cage.  This is an extraordinarily well designed tattoo and it fits Ellie beautifully.

EllieG_Update3_Tat03EllieG_Update3_Tat04EllieG_Update3_Tat02Ellie’s most recent work was done by Dr. Woo from the Shamrock Social Club.  Dr. Woo’s stellar work is gaining such notoriety that he recently got his own feature in Buzzfeed.

We certainly haven’t heard the last of Ellie’s incredible voice.  I suspect we also have not witnessed the last of her body art.  As she continues to get inked, “New 2 Tats” will continue to feature it.

Hottie Ink Update (Not Wasting Any Time Edition): Ariana Grande’s Third Tattoo!

AGrande_3rdTat_Pic01     Singing sensation (and long-time Nickelodeon actress) has already been kind enough to share her love of body art with her fans, as she has photos and videos show her first two tattoos being applied:  A heart on the second toe on her right foot and the word “Mille tendresse” (‘a thousand tendernesses’) on the back of her neck.

AGrande_3rdTat_Pic02    Just a few days after she showed off the tattoo on the back of her neck, Ariana changed her profile picture on Twitter and Instagram and it seemed to show a new piece of ink appearing on her left rib cage.  It turns out it is another script tattoo.  This time, she tapped into her Italian heritage and had the word “bellissima” (‘very beautiful’) etched on her torso.  Ariana seems to love these small, feminine adorable tattoos.  So, I fully expect we will be seeing more updates in the future.

Celebrity Tattoo of the Day (Step Up Edition): Briana Evigan

BEvigan_Pic07    In the summer of the 2006, Touchstone Pictures decided to capitalize on the growing popularity of the dance crew movement.  Dance crews, which typically involve groups of friends facing off against one another in elaborately choreographed dance battles, had begun to be promoted in mainstream media through movies like “You Got Served” and competition shows, such as “America’s Best Dance Crew” and “So You Think You Can Dance?”.  Touchstone released “Step Up”, a film centered around the interactions between the worlds of street dance and classical dance (It also brought future husband and wife, Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum, together).

bevigan_pic01    The enormous success of “Step Up” (It made over $110 million at the box office on just a $12 million budget) all but guaranteed a sequel.  That sequel, “Step Up 2:  The Streets” was the first big role for actress and dancer Briana Evigan.  If her last name sounds familiar, it should.  She is the youngest daughter of Greg Evigan, a popular actor from the 80’s and 90’s, known for such television series as “My Two Dads” and “TekWar”.

BEvigan_Pic06    Born in 1986, this L.A. girl had been immersed in dancing since she was 9 years old, no doubt inspired by her mother, who was also a dancer.  Her love of dancing eventually landed her roles in music videos for artists such as T-Pain, Linkin Park and Flo-Rida.  This was a prelude to her natural first real acting gig as Andie West in the “Step Up” series.

BEvigan_Pic02     While not well received among film critics (achieving just a 25% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  Of course, the original “Step Up” only scored 19%), it was another box office smash, raking in over $150 million at the box office, on just a $23 million budget.  The movie also launched rapper Flo-Rida into super-stardom with his song from the soundtrack, “Low” (which included a music video starring Briana).

BEvigan_Pic03     Briana’s success in “Step Up 2:  The Streets” got her numerous other acting roles.  Alas, most of them were in the teen horror film genre, in which so many young stars get pigeon-holed.  So, she hasn’t had a chance to really build upon that initial success.  However, to obtain inspiration, 2014 is showing Briana returning to her roots by reprising her role as Andie in the upcoming “Step Up:  All In” film.

BEvigan_Pic05    In addition to acting and dancing, Briana is also heavily involved in charitable organizations.  She has been working with JVB Project Asia in recent months, tweeting photos from overseas of her experiences with that group.  She also promotes the Somaly Mam Foundation on her official website.  Somaly Mam is dedicated to ending human trafficking and modern slavery.

BEvigan_Pic04     The spunky Evigan is also a huge fan of tattoos.  One of her earliest tattoos is a set of three dots just below on the wrist on her left forearm.  She got them with Rumer Willis (daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore) and their friend, Samantha, to represent their friendship.

BEvigan_Tat10    On that same arm, placed on the wrist, is an elegant script design of the initials B and J, which stand for her first and middle name, Briana Jane.

BEvigan_Tat06BEvigan_Tat08     Briana’s most recent tattoo is script design on her left shoulder (although, I cannot make out what it says).

BEvigan_Tat07BEvigan_Tat05   Briana’s most prominent tattoo sits along her torso on the right side of her rib cage.  It is three script words that read “Butterfly, Protector, Strength”.  These represent her and her siblings, Vanessa Lee and Jason.  Each word is the meaning of one another’s name.  Butterfly is the meaning of Vanessa; Protector is the meaning of Jason; and Strength is the meaning of Briana.

Tattoos around the Interwebs: Stunning Torso Tattoo

Generally, I do not write posts that feature just a single tattoo image that I found while scanning the internet.  However, I will make an exception for this stunning torso tattoo.

When you find the right artist with the right vision to bring your idea to life in a way that is flattering to your body, instead of overwhelming it, you will end up with a tattoo that shows the full, amazing potential of body art.

This particularly beautiful floral design just erupts with visually pleasing colors.  Then there is the level of detail, from the flowers to the vines to breaking waves to the palm trees, that keeps you mesmerized by this piece.  The colors and dimensions are striking in their own right.  But, the clincher is how well the design meshes with the contours of her body.

This incredible tattoo was done by artist Champion Grubbs from Guru Tattoo in San Diego California.

Tattoos in the News (Breaking Boundaries Edition): Theresa Vail

If ever there was a defining moment for the massive paradigm shift in attitudes toward tattoos, it will come this Sunday (September 15th), when the Miss America pageant will have its first contestant openly displaying her tattoos.

Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, proudly showed off her torso tattoo during the swimsuit portion of the Kansas competition.  It is a script design of the famous ‘Serenity Prayer’:

God, Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change

Courage to change the things I can

and Wisdom to know the difference.

The meaning is deeply personal to this Kansas State senior.  While growing up, she was victimized by terrible bullying.  The words of this prayer helped her find the strength to perservere.  After masking the tattoo in previous pageants, Vail got the green light from the Miss America officials to show off her ink during the statewide and national competitions.  She felt it was important to show off everything that tells her story, tattoos included.  She considered herself to be hypocritical if she did not.

TVail_Pic04    In ways that go well beyond body art, Theresa is a boundary breaker.   She is also a seargeant in the Kansas Army National Guard, as well as being an avid outdoorswoman.  She also likes to skydive and can sing opera, a talent she will be displaying during the Miss America pageant.

Theresa has proudly embraced her position as a role model who is showing that females do not need to be defined by particular, and restricting, stereotypes.  A beauty queen who also serves her country, loves outdoor living, is an opera singer and proudly displays her body art tosses convention and pre-conceived notions out the window.  I know who I will be rooting for.
